Black Canyon Consulting (BCC) is searching for an Entry Level Software Developer to support National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). This opportunity is full time at the NIH-NCBI in Bethesda, MD and/or remote work.

Position Information

The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is part of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  NCBI offers an intellectually stimulating environment where the top scientists, skilled software developers, and others work together to solve challenging problems and literally help to accelerate cures for diseases!  NCBI is the world’s premier biomedical center,  providing over 6 million users each day with research, clinical, genetic, and other information that directly impacts biomedical research and public health. NCBI’s wide range of applications, platforms (node, python, Django, C++, you name it) and environments (big data [petabytes], machine learning, multiple clouds) serve more users than almost any other US Government Agency, according to https://analytics.usa.gov/. 

We have multiple software developer positions including full stack and backend from entry-level to senior and tech lead. You will have opportunities to work in many cutting-edge applications at NCBI, such as the following:

  • The Human Genotype and Phenotype (dbGaP), the largest publicly funded and free archive of it’s kind in the world. It collects and hosts data across more than 2 million samples, billions of phenotype values, and trillions of genotypes. dbGaP is the premier resource for all genome-wide association studies (GWAS) - the approach of genetics research to associate specific genetic variations with particular diseases - use dbGaP.
  • PubMed (with 5+ million daily users accessing 33 million+ citations, including 7 million+ full text articles in PMC
  • ClinicalTrials.gov(the place to find both privately and publicly funded clinical trial studies around the world)
  • GenBank( with over 12 trillion nucleotide bases)
  • Sequence Read Archive(SRA)( the largest publicly available repository of high-throughput sequencing data, available in multiple cloud providers and NCBI servers). 

As a Software Developer, you will contribute to development efforts that support the goals and initiatives of the product team and organization while learning Software Development practices from an experienced team. This work is performed under the guidance of the Technical Program Manager and the Technical Lead.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with the Software Development team on front-end and back-end software development tasks
  • Contribute to design discussions for new software development efforts
  • Learn Software Development practices from an experienced team
  • Participate in software documentation activities with the team
  • Work as an integral part of an agile product team to deliver an unbelievably great user experience

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate may or may not be a United States citizen and must have at least a Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or Engineering or equivalent work experience.

We are looking for an individual with:

  • Experience developing software applications in Python
  • Experience developing software with GoLang, C++, and/or Java a plus
  • Understanding of front-end technologies, such as JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3
  • Experience working with SQL databases
  • Ability to work with common structured documents (XML, JSON, CSV)
  • Understanding of ASN.1 a plus
  • Experience with version control systems like Git or SVN  
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and team player
