The Design Manager acts as the group manager, reporting directly to the Engineering Manager. In this position, the Design Manager is responsible for the career development of the Design Engineers to include training/coaching (both internal and external), career pathways, and skill development. The Design Manager is responsible for overseeing the investigation, recommendation, and implementation of new technologies by the organization to best support both in-house processes and projects as well as those in support of end customer projects. In this role, the Design Manager is expected to conduct regular one on one meetings with their direct reports while conducting team meetings bi-weekly.


A Design Manager collaborates with coworkers, customers, and suppliers to utilize the latest technologies while creating equipment for integration into distribution and production solutions across material handling and various manufacturing industries . This involves understanding the customer’s goals and objectives in order to develop and support smart engineered solutions. The Design Manager is responsible for overseeing team members through all phases of their projects. These phases include research and concepting, applications sales support, component selection, system design and layout using standard components or custom engineering when necessary, drawing package creation and release, design and release review, testing, troubleshooting and documentation submission.


The Design Manager is a position for an individual with the experience to apply technical skills learned previously to provide value to Bastian Solutions’ engineering teams through assignment and oversight of engineering duties for other team members. The Design Manager’s responsibility is to help direct the work of the team and serve as a mentor for experienced team members as well as Team Leads.

 The ideal candidate will also have several years of automotive equipment design experience, preferably within a Tier 1 or Tier 2 custom equipment supplier, where exposure to highly engineered, safety‑critical, turn-key, and production‑intensive systems is common. Experience must include working with or supporting robotic automation systems, with an understanding of industrial robot integration, cell design, safety standards, electrtical integration and automated process development.


Job Functions:


  • Promote and drive the creation, modification, and testing of equipment designs and layouts per customer and Bastian Solutions specifications and standards
    • Collaborate with engineering managers and leads to promote efficient creation and execution of simulations for reach studies, cycle time estimates, and offline programming
    • Ensure ISO training occurs regularly, processes are followed, with improvements and additions considered as part of continuous improvement efforts
    • Ensure drawing and release packages are created and reviewed by mechanical and automation teams as needed to provide quality releases with minimal defects
    • Continue to improve and automate the creation and release of mechanical bills of materials per SolidWorks and AutoCAD models, drawings and schematics
    • Oversee the pre-release of system mechanical components in conjunction with Project Managers
    • Ensure drawings are updated to create proper revision As-Built packages at project shipment and As-Installed packages at project completion for install and maintenance teams, including spare parts recommendations and preventative maintenance documentation
    • Promote continued development, documentation and improvement of standard equipment and library items
    • Effectively communicate schedules, plans, and training to internal and external personnel
    • Review creation and modification of maintenance manuals, preventative maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting guides to ensure adherence to templates and ease of understanding and use by end customers or other Bastian Solutions team members
    • Attend and encourage others to attend training and become certified in applicable technologies or programs
    • Display thorough knowledge of applicable theories, practices, and business practices
    • Participate in and lead internal training sessions for ongoing career & skills development across departments, including engineering best practices
    • Drive accurate entries, reporting, and scheduling with regards to team member project billings and utilization
    • Review project financial reports and continuously look for areas of improvement through material costs as well as engineering efficiencies
    • Develop and mentor new and existing leads and engineers through regularly scheduled one on ones, department meetings, and performance evaluations
    • Review and critique equipment designs per customer and Bastian Solutions specifications and standards
    • Establish and delegate work tasks in order to successfully meet expectations for the department
    • Frequent and consistent interface with external clients is important. Assist with building relationships for future business opportunities
    • Work independently on varied and complex tasks and/or provide functional leadership without direct supervision as needed
    • Provide expertise and guidance to less experienced individuals
    • Provide quality oversight and review the technical documentation of peers and vendors
    • Be a team member and contributor within the office, providing help outside of department scope when required
    • Deliver projects that meet or exceed customer’s expectations, developing repeat customers
    • Attend meetings and functions on time with active involvement
    • Research new components and materials, providing recommendations for adoption into standards
    • Coordinate with other managers, engineers or teams to ensure all components are accounted for across disciplines
    • Support after-sales personnel on technical aspects of equipment and systems
    • Support project installations and post-startup mechanical maintenance trips
    • Prepare procedures, reports, and specifications
    • Perform discipline checks on product/equipment design and technical documentation
    • Oversee the design, execution, and reporting on product/equipment design validation tests
    • Perform supervisory tasks as required on-time, including but not limited to timesheet approvals, expense reports, and performance reviews

Travel Expectations:

  • Approximately 20% travel to other sites (all travel expense paid by company)

Preferred Skills & Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of Leadership experience with Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering or Technology or 12+ years of relevant industry experience required
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills
  • Literate with Microsoft Office product suits
  • Mechanical hands-on aptitude with troubleshooting know-how
  • SolidWorks experience
  • AutoCAD experience, 2D and 3D
  • Design for Manufacturing/Design for Assembly experience with ability to produce fabrication, welding, and assembly drawings from 3D models efficiently
  • Fluent in advanced analysis techniques, i.e. FEA, SolidWorks Simulator
  • Service skills in a customer facing role
  • Effective problem solving
  • Displays proficient with time management
  • Able to multi-task and set priorities based on project management direction
  • Displays high aptitude for technical writing (documentation) processes
  • Willingness to share skills, knowledge, and expertise
