The Role

As the engineering manager for our core team, you will lead and define the Lazer experience for 30 engineers, which will grow in the next year. You will become the first point of contact for the group, balancing engineering excellence goals with ensuring engineers have a good experience to continue our historically incredibly high retention.

This includes:

  • Ensure that engineers operate at a high level and provide quality work for our clients.

    • Collaborating closely with the project delivery leaders to understand ongoing project context and help resolve issues if they arise.

    • Conducting regular performance feedback cycles to ensure engineers understand their performance goals and are consistently improving.

    • Mentoring and coaching engineers on technical growth as well as project management and communication skills as needed.

  • Managing engineering up-skilling by coordinating, encouraging and helping engineers expand their skillsets, particularly around AI application engineering.

  • Overseeing bench projects for engineers between projects to produce PoCs, perspectives, or help with training.

  • Managing allocation of engineers to new projects by working closely with the sales team while understanding engineer preferences and skills.

  • Drive recruitment efforts to help grow the team scale:

    • Deciding skillsets and industries based on industry trends and sales projections.

    • Assessing new candidates to ensure optimal fits in technical skills and culture.

  • Continue building an optimal culture of being “the best place for engineers.”

    • Ensuring appropriate work-life balance and engineer satisfaction overall.

    • Create initiatives to promote knowledge sharing and cross-project collaboration.

  • Designing new processes and initiatives to push the team forward as it grows.

  • Reporting on engineer satisfaction, skills distribution, allocation projections, and other important metrics to the wider Lazer org.

Requirements

You would be leading some of the best engineers in product development, requiring both deep technical knowledge as well as strong leadership and communication skills.

  • Strong experience as an engineer in the startups, venture building, product development space working across the stack.

    • Including frontend, backend, and infra experience.

  • Deep understanding of the AI space across different disciplines including machine learning, LLMs, generative imagery, etc.

  • Proven experience in engineering management and leadership over multiple teams in a fast-paced product environment.

  • Record of building and growing teams in the startup or AI space.

  • Experience building and maintaining culture in a remote-first environment.

  • Excellent communication skills to effectively engage with other leaders as well as build rapport and trust with engineers.

Nice to Have

The following would be bonus experience, though feel free to highlight any additional experience or skills you may have. We like working with people with varied backgrounds and experiences.

  • Experience working in a technical consulting leadership role.

  • Experience defining strategy for an engineering function.

  • Experience with development in mobile, web3 / crypto, and commerce.

  • Familiarity with UI/UX design and branding workflows and best practices.

  • Experience working in or supporting sales-related engineering activity.

  • Relevant industry certifications or publications.
