Position: Engineering Manager

Reporting To: General Manager

Supervisory: 6-8 direct reports


Summary and Essential Duties

The Engineering Manager is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the Engineering Department including personnel, projects, and schedule. This manager will integrate the engineering project schedule to align and support the production of our client’s Core Products. With a team and customer-centric mindset, the Engineering Manager will support the CTO’s initiatives in pursuit of new technologies and product lines. This individual will plan, direct, coordinate, and oversee all Engineering activities as well as infuse engineering best practices (systems, processes, tools) to enable efficiency and cost-effectiveness to meet the current and future needs of customers.


This challenging and rewarding position offers the right candidate the opportunity to grow with the company and report to the General Manager. This individual will provide a link between our client's leadership team, customers (domestic and international), and the engineering team to support the design and manufacture of precision sapphire, glass, fused quartz, and fused silica products. They will provide input into the analysis of custom projects and quotes. They are a player/coach who can lead and manage a team while also executing projects as a dedicated team member. This individual can effectively communicate priorities, changes in direction, and manage up, down, and across to facilitate collaboration. They will consistently demonstrate individual and team behavior that supports the mission and strategic goals of the parent company and our client, and will be a role model to their team and other staff. They will mentor and advise team members to enable the Engineering Team to reach its fullest potential.


The ideal candidate has an engineering degree (mechanical, ceramic, glass), has experience in leading a team focused on the design and development of custom-engineered products serving the aerospace and defense industries. The right individual will be a people and values-centric leader and have the leadership and experience to enable a growth-minded, collaborative, innovative culture within the engineering team. This individual will be commercially minded and establish relationships with key partners across the organization as well as external stakeholders and customers, as needed.



Job specific duties and responsibilities

  • Prioritize, manage, schedule and oversee daily and long-term engineering projects for on-time completion
  • Manage, lead, work alongside and develop the Engineering Team, including providing technical guidance and conducting regular performance reviews 
  • Work with CTO to develop and execute on the Technology Roadmap; review and approve incoming engineering projects 
  • Manage, coordinate and liaison with Government projects and customers weekly
  • Review Government contracts to protect company interests
  • Coordinate and schedule engineering projects with Production
  • Manage, schedule and oversee top level, engineering and company-wide projects
  • Support other departments and their activities: QA, Sales, Production and R&D
  • Participate in and support Leadership Team meetings, activities and initiatives
  • Project and prepare monthly engineering project activity report for Leadership Team
  • Develop, review, update and ensure adherence to engineering processes and procedures with a focus on improving efficiency and reducing waste 
  • Conduct Engineering training as required

Qualifications

  • BS in Engineering / related field or equivalent job experience.
  • Prior aerospace/defense industry experience. 
  • Success leading, developing and managing a team of 6-8 engineers. 
  • Decisive leadership, experience driving high performing teams. 
  • Proven ability innovating product lines, managing process and operational improvements, and influencing sales and marketing, all to build bottom line growth.
  • Success leading and managing in a highly technical environment.
  • Diverse experience set, including hands on operations and technical process and new product development.
  • Understand and care about sophisticated technology and further developing its commercial use.
  • Language Skills - Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures/drawings/prints, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of other management, employees, and customers. Effectively communicate with people in potentially stressful situations. 

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures/drawings/prints, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
