Engineering Manager, Safety

About the role

Character is deeply committed to ensuring the safety of our users on our platform. Our Safety Engineering Team is responsible for building frameworks, systems, and features that enable us to develop new safety capabilities & apply / enforce our safety policies and work cross functionally with our Research teams on safety aspects of our models. 

What you'll do

• Manage a team of engineers, providing coaching, mentoring, and development opportunities. Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture.

• Contribute directly to the codebase when necessary, tackling technical challenges, building new features, and ensuring high-quality software.

• Define technical vision and architecture, make architectural decisions, and guide the team in delivering scalable, efficient, and maintainable solutions.

• Implement robust monitoring, alerting, and reporting systems to ensure the effectiveness and health of product features.

• Work closely with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to deliver well-designed software that meets user and business needs.

• Take an active role in solving complex technical challenges, debugging critical issues, and finding solutions in a timely manner.

• Communicate effectively with stakeholders, including executives, product teams, and other engineering teams, to ensure alignment on priorities and goals.

• Specifically in the safety space - design, develop, and deploy systems and algorithms to detect, prevent, and mitigate harmful behavior and inappropriate content 

• Continuously evaluate emerging trends in AI safety, security, and privacy, and develop new approaches to address evolving challenges.

Who you are

• 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3+ years in an engineering leadership role.

• Prior experience working on Trust & Safety, content moderation, abuse detection, or related areas, preferably in consumer-facing platforms or applications.

• Proven ability to lead and motivate a team, providing clear direction while fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.

• Strong experience in system design, architecture, and development practices, with an ability to make critical decisions and trade-offs.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work across teams and manage relationships with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Solid understanding of software engineering principles, code quality, and testing practices.

• A passion for building great products and solving complex problems, with a hands-on attitude when it comes to getting things done.

• Experience working in fast-paced, agile environments with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
