Grammarly is excited to offer a remote-first hybrid working model. Grammarly team members in this role must be based in Germany, and, depending on business needs, they must meet in person for collaboration weeks, traveling if necessary to the hub(s) where their team is based.

This flexible approach gives team members the best of both worlds: plenty of focus time along with in-person collaboration that fosters trust and unlocks creativity.

About Grammarly

Grammarly is the world’s leading AI writing assistance company trusted by over 30 million people and 70,000 teams. From instantly creating a first draft to perfecting every message, Grammarly helps people at 96% of the Fortune 500 and teams at companies like Atlassian, Databricks, and Zoom get their point across—and get results—with best-in-class security practices that keep data private and protected. Founded in 2009, Grammarly is No. 7 on the Forbes Cloud 100, one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential Companies, one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies in AI, and one of Inc.’s Best Workplaces.

The Opportunity

To achieve our ambitious goals, we’re looking for an Engineering Manager to join our Engineering Platform team. This role will manage and grow the team of engineers who build and scale our foundational infrastructure and develop best-in-class tooling to support all of Grammarly Engineering.

Grammarly’s Engineering Platform organization builds the Internal Developer Platform (IDP) that will centralize and standardize infrastructure and core services management, allowing engineers to focus on delivering business value without getting bogged down by low-level complexities. We aim to ensure that every engineer can easily build, develop, and maintain any Grammarly product offering using our IDP. This role is instrumental in building an efficient engineering organization, which is critical to realizing our vision of improving lives by improving communication.

Grammarly’s engineers and researchers have the freedom to innovate and uncover breakthroughs—and, in turn, influence our product roadmap. The complexity of our technical challenges is growing rapidly as we scale our interfaces, algorithms, and infrastructure. You can hear more from our team on our technical blog.

As an Engineering Manager, you will:

  • Lead and grow teams by attracting high-caliber senior talent.
  • Hire, develop, and manage engineers by fostering a psychological safety, diversity, and inclusion culture. The role is essential in creating a highly productive, healthy, and enjoyable working environment for the team.
  • Work with multiple complex technical domains (cloud infrastructure, developer tools, high-load production systems, shared infrastructure) and organizational contexts (engineering autonomy and productivity, incident management, security, reliability, etc.)
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders across the engineering organization and beyond and manage different dependencies.
  • Research and act based on feedback from the engineering team to improve the Developer Productivity.
  • Guide the team to build and operate services at an internet scale with high availability, reliability, and security.

Qualifications

  • Has a strong track record of building and leading productive engineering teams.
  • Can systematically break down ambiguous problems and build execution plans.
  • Demonstrates strong technical judgment on engineering architecture and product decisions.
  • Leads by example and sets the right context for decisions.
  • Builds strong relationships with their direct reports and peers across the company.
  • Nurtures their team’s talent and raises the technical talent bar when recruiting for their team.
  • Sets and communicates priorities for themselves and their team while driving execution.
  • Cares deeply, not only about the work but also how that work is accomplished.
  • Thrives in environments where it’s necessary to make decisions with incomplete information but can change course when presented with new data.
  • Is curious and has a learning mindset.
  • Expertise in infrastructure or developer productivity would be a plus.
  • Embodies our EAGER values—is ethical, adaptable, gritty, empathetic, and remarkable.
  • Is inspired by our MOVE principles, which are the blueprint for how things get done at Grammarly: move fast and learn faster, obsess about creating customer value, value impact over activity, and embrace healthy disagreement rooted in trust.
  • Is able to meet in person for their team’s scheduled collaboration weeks, traveling if necessary to the hub where their team is based.

Support for you, professionally and personally

  • Professional growth: We hire people we trust and give team members autonomy to do their best work. We also support professional development with training, coaching, and regular feedback.
  • A connected team: Grammarly builds a product that helps people connect, and we apply this mindset to our own team. We have a highly collaborative culture supported by our EAGER values. We also take time to celebrate our colleagues and accomplishments with global, local, and team-specific events and programs.
  • Comprehensive benefits: Grammarly offers all team members competitive pay along with a benefits package encompassing superior health care (including mental health benefits). We also offer support to set up a home office, ample and defined time off, gym and recreation stipends, and more.

We encourage you to apply

At Grammarly, we value our differences, and we encourage all to apply. Grammarly is an equal opportunity company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race or ethnic origin, religion or belief, gender, disability, sexual identity, or age.

What We Do

Grammarly’s real-time writing assistance helps 30 million people and 30,000 teams write more clearly and effectively. Grammarly Business is tailored for enterprises and organizations of all sizes to help achieve business objectives by improving communication quality, efficiency, and consistency. Additionally, Grammarly for Developers allows builders to integrate Grammarly’s writing suggestions directly into their products, increasing their value by delivering intelligent and easy-to-use communication suggestions to their users. Our company makes money by selling subscriptions, not by selling user data. In building a product that scales across multiple platforms and devices, Grammarly works to empower people whenever and wherever they communicate.

Across the United States, Canada, and Ukraine, Grammarly’s values-driven team is growing to support our expanding user base and to continue developing our platform into a truly comprehensive communication partner.
