Engineering Manager, New Product Development
Location: Maryland Heights, MO
Job Type: Full-time, in-office
Compensation: Starting at $125,000 annually plus annual incentive opportunity. Actual starting pay will be based on experience, skills, and overall qualifications.
About the Role
We are seeking an Engineering Manager, New Product Development to lead a multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for developing innovative embedded control products and systems. This role provides both technical leadership and people leadership, guiding product development efforts from concept through production launch.
The Engineering Manager will oversee Mechanical, Firmware, Electronic Hardware, and Electrical Engineers while partnering closely with Marketing, Quality, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and Operations teams. This position is ideal for a leader who enjoys developing talent, solving complex technical challenges, and bringing new products to market.
What You'll Do
Engineering Leadership and Team Development
- Lead and manage a cross-functional engineering team including Mechanical, Firmware, Electronic Hardware, and Electrical Engineers
- Provide coaching, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for team members
- Establish team objectives and individual goals aligned with company priorities
- Support recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and retention efforts
- Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
New Product Development
- Lead the development of embedded control products from concept through commercialization
- Guide system architecture, design decisions, and technical trade-off evaluations
- Coordinate activities across engineering disciplines to deliver integrated product solutions
- Ensure projects meet performance, quality, reliability, safety, cost, and manufacturability requirements
- Partner with Marketing to translate customer and market needs into technical requirements
Project and Resource Management
- Manage engineering resources, priorities, and schedules across multiple development programs
- Collaborate with the Project Manager to ensure projects remain on schedule, within budget, and properly staffed
- Support project planning, risk management, and milestone execution
- Balance short-term priorities with long-term product development objectives
- Drive accountability for project deliverables and technical outcomes
Technical Excellence and Process Improvement
- Establish and maintain engineering processes, standards, and best practices
- Lead design reviews, code reviews, verification activities, and risk management efforts
- Implement Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and DFMEA methodologies
- Identify opportunities to improve development efficiency, engineering productivity, and product quality
- Evaluate and implement technologies that support product development and laboratory capabilities
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Production to support product launches and production readiness
- Partner with Quality, Supply Chain, and Operations to ensure successful product commercialization
- Engage with customers, suppliers, and external partners to address technical challenges and support development initiatives
- Promote strong communication and alignment across functions throughout the product lifecycle
Travel
- Minimal travel may be required occasionally
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical field
- 10 or more years of engineering experience in embedded systems, controls, electronic hardware, firmware, or electromechanical product development
- 5 or more years of engineering leadership experience with direct people management responsibilities
- Proven success leading new product development projects from concept through production release
- Strong knowledge of embedded control systems, microcontrollers, electronic hardware design, firmware development, and system integration
- Experience managing cross-functional engineering teams and multiple concurrent projects
- Strong project planning, resource management, budgeting, and risk management skills
- Excellent communication, leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Engineering, Engineering Management, or Business Administration
- Knowledge of systems engineering methodologies and requirements management practices
- Experience with communication protocols such as CAN, Modbus, Ethernet, SPI, I2C, UART, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi
- Familiarity with PCB development, sensor integration, and control systems
- Experience with Product Lifecycle Management systems and development tools
- Knowledge of Agile, Stage-Gate, or hybrid product development methodologies
- Familiarity with regulatory and compliance requirements for embedded electronic products
- Lean product development and continuous improvement experience
- Experience implementing and maintaining data acquisition systems
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer
- Ability to work in office, laboratory, and manufacturing environments
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to review technical drawings, schematics, software applications, and engineering documentation
- Occasional travel may require air and ground transportation
- Ability to work additional hours when needed to support critical project milestones
