Job Description
The Engineering Manager is responsible for managing the operations and maintenance of an organization's network infrastructure. This includes ensuring optimal performance, availability, and security of the network and managing a team of network engineers, technicians, and support staff. The role involves strategic planning, daily operational management, and troubleshooting of any network-related issues, ensuring business continuity.
Key Responsibilities:
Network Operations Management:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of network systems (LAN, WAN, WLAN, VPN, firewalls, routers, and switches).
- Ensure continuous monitoring of network performance and uptime.
- Develop and implement strategies for optimizing network performance and capacity.
- Manage network outages and provide quick resolution to restore service.
- Implement network security protocols to protect against cyber threats.
Team Leadership:
- Manage, mentor, and lead the network operations team (engineers, analysts, and technicians).
- Assign tasks, projects, and responsibilities to team members based on skill levels and operational needs.
- Facilitate ongoing training and development to keep the team updated on new technologies.
Network Security:
- Collaborate with the security team to ensure that network defenses are up-to-date.
- Manage firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection systems (IDS), and other security tools.
- Monitor and respond to potential security breaches or vulnerabilities in the network.
Incident and Problem Management:
- Develop and maintain incident response protocols for handling network-related issues.
- Investigate and resolve critical incidents, ensuring minimal impact on business operations.
- Perform root-cause analysis to prevent recurring issues.
Capacity Planning and Network Optimization:
- Analyze and plan for future network capacity, considering business growth and technology trends.
- Evaluate and recommend network hardware, software, and services to support business requirements.
- Implement network optimization solutions to ensure maximum efficiency and performance.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain detailed documentation of network configurations, processes, and operational procedures.
- Generate regular reports on network performance, incidents, and team productivity.
- Provide network performance data to upper management and make recommendations for improvements.
Vendor and Contract Management:
- Liaise with external vendors, service providers, and consultants.
- Evaluate and manage contracts, service-level agreements (SLAs), and maintenance agreements.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in network administration or operations.
- Prior experience in a management or supervisory role.
- In-depth knowledge of networking concepts and technologies, including LAN, WAN, VPN, SD-WAN, and MPLS.
- Experience with network hardware (e.g., Cisco, Juniper, HP) and software tools (e.g., Wireshark, SolarWinds, etc.).
- Strong understanding of network protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, BGP, OSPF, etc.).
- Familiarity with network security tools and protocols (firewalls, IDS/IPS, encryption, VPN).
- Leadership and Management:
- Proven experience managing network operations teams in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks efficiently.
- Problem Solving:
- Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to resolve complex technical issues.
- Experience in managing and solving network incidents quickly and effectively.
Work Environment:
- This position may require being on-call for network emergencies outside of regular working hours.
- The role may involve working with a distributed or global network, requiring coordination across different time zones.
