About Tapestry
Tapestry is a team within Alphabet working to build the AI-powered electric grid. We are tackling one of the world’s most important infrastructure challenges: helping the energy system become more visible, understandable, reliable, affordable, abundant, and clean.
Originally born at X, Alphabet’s moonshot factory, Tapestry brings together experts in energy, AI, software, engineering, and product to build tools that help the electricity ecosystem plan smarter, move faster, and operate more efficiently.
This is a global effort. Tapestry supports partners across the U.S., U.K., Chile, New Zealand, Australia, and Brazil as they work toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
Joining Tapestry means doing high-impact work with a multidisciplinary team tackling a problem that matters at global scale. Learn more about our team and our mission here.
About the role
We are looking for a Foundational Architect and Leader to serve as the Engineering Manager for our Infrastructure and Developer Productivity Engineering team. At Tapestry, we are building a high-performance substrate that allows our AI and Power Systems models to simulate the global energy grid.
You will lead a highly skilled and motivated team responsible for the reliability, scalability, and velocity of our entire moonshot. At this stage of our growth, developer productivity is our most critical lever, and we take it seriously, viewing it as a core competitive advantage rather than an afterthought. You will bridge the gap between startup speed and ‘Google-scale’ robustness by seeding a culture of ‘Design as Code’ and AI-augmented engineering. Your mission is to build the high-leverage tooling and agentic workflows that allow our engineers to move from complex architectural designs to mission-critical deployments with total confidence and zero friction.
How you will make 10X Impact
- Build the "Git" for the Grid: Design and operate a world-class cloud-native infrastructure that supports heavy-duty AI workloads, massive geospatial data processing, and physics-based simulations.
- Developer Empowerment: Architect self-service platforms and CI/CD primitives that allow our multidisciplinary teams (ML, Computation, Power Systems, Software) to move from idea to production deployment without friction.
- Production Hardening: Lead the SRE and Developer Productivity Engineering strategy to ensure Tapestry’s tools are as reliable as the electric grid itself. You will own the "day-two" operations: monitoring, incident response, and security at scale.
- Operational Excellence: Fostering a culture of operational excellence and psychological safety.
What you should have:
- Technical Depth: 8+ years of experience in Infrastructure, Site Reliability, DevOps, Developer Experience, or Developer Productivity Engineering with a deep understanding of Kubernetes, Cloud Architecture (GCP preferred), and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform/Pulumi).
- Leadership: 2+ years of experience in a formal people management role, with a proven ability to mentor senior ICs and manage cross-functional stakeholders.
- Systems Thinking: A "Platform-as-a-Product" mindset – you build systems that empower other engineers to be self-sufficient.
- Operational Excellence: Experience managing high-availability production environments and a track record of leading through complex incidents and post-mortems.
- Security and Compliance: Familiarity with securing cloud environments and managing data privacy/governance at an enterprise level.
It’d be great if you also had:
- Specialized Workloads: Experience managing infrastructure for ML-heavy organizations (GPU orchestration, high-performance computing).
- The "Zero-to-One" Spirit: Experience building out DevOps and Developer Productivity Engineering culture from scratch in a high-growth or R and D-heavy environment.
Our values
- Take charge: We take initiative and own outcomes that move the mission forward.
- Transform with purpose: We build solutions that solve real problems and create meaningful impact.
- Be a Tapestry, not a thread: We collaborate across diverse skills and perspectives to achieve more than we can individually.
- Always fine-tune: We stay curious, seek feedback, and refine our understanding as we learn.
- Stay grounded: We listen openly, value different perspectives, and stay focused on what matters most.
