Job Summary & Responsibilities

Success Criteria

In this role, you will support active engineering work by assisting with modeling, documentation, testing, and data accuracy while working professionally in both office and shop environments. Successful interns and co-ops are curious, communicate well, and learn by doing. You will review drawings, support engineering changes, help resolve fabrication or assembly questions, and keep documentation current in ERP and PDM systems.

Strong performers pay attention to detail, ask questions, and take ownership of their development. Success means gaining real engineering experience while helping keep projects on track.

Summary / Objective

This internship is built to develop future engineers through hands-on project work, mentorship, and exposure to full product development. You will assist with design, documentation, build support, and testing on real products that go into production.

Your experience will reflect the work of early-career engineers while providing a supportive environment focused on growth and technical development.

What You’ll Do

Your work will align with your academic major, skill set, and term length. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Supporting CAD modeling, part and assembly updates, and drawing reviews
  • Assisting with BOM creation, change notices, and documentation updates in ERP and PDM systems
  • Participating in design, build-readiness, and manufacturing reviews
  • Helping resolve fabrication or assembly issues with engineering, manufacturing, and quality
  • Contributing to engineering change proposals and design improvement efforts

Intern Tracks

This posting covers multiple engineering tracks. Assignments are aligned based on skills and interest.

Mechanical Engineering (Design or Project Engineering)

  • Modeling parts and assemblies, updating drawings and redlines
  • Basic checks or calculations with guidance; exposure to FEA workflows
  • ECN preparation, configuration control, and BOM maintenance
  • Shop-floor support during machining, fit-up, and assembly

Electrical and Controls Engineering (Design and Test)

  • Updating wiring diagrams and panel layouts under supervision
  • Assisting with PLC/HMI test scripts, I/O checkout, and instrumentation
  • Supporting execution of test procedures and capturing results
  • Maintaining device documentation, harness details, and parts lists

Manufacturing Engineering

  • Supporting build-readiness reviews
  • Assisting with tooling or fixture tasks and simple DFM feedback
  • Conducting time studies and supporting work instruction updates
  • Partnering with the shop to resolve minor nonconformances

Process Engineering

  • Updating routers, travelers, and BOM/routing details
  • Supporting ECN documentation and work order health checks
  • Coordinating daily with manufacturing to maintain workflow

Learning & Development

Interns and co-ops follow a structured development path that mirrors early-career engineering progression:

  • Design Exposure: How parts and assemblies are created, detailed, and reviewed
  • Manufacturing Exposure: Hands-on visibility into fabrication, machining, and assembly, closing the loop with engineering
  • Project Exposure: Participation in proposals or improvement initiatives that impact cost, schedule, and performance
  • Mentorship: A dedicated mentor from day one, with recurring check-ins to guide work and support growth

Returning interns may take on expanded responsibilities and may be eligible for compensation increases in subsequent terms.

Schedule & Duration

  • Full-time during summer (10–12 weeks)
  • Part-time or full-time options for spring and fall co-ops
  • Standard Jered schedule: 4x9 + 1x4 workweek (four 9-hour days, half-day Fridays)

Please include your preferred track and available term dates, and feel free to attach a brief project portfolio or relevant coursework examples.
