Jacobs Space Exploration Group (JSEG) is comprised of 10 companies and is located at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL (ranked #1 in Best Places to Live by U.S. News 2022-23). Position Description:

The Systems Engineer will provide direct technical support to the Artemis II Secondary Payloads Lead Systems Engineer (LSE) supporting Spacecraft/Payload Integration & Evolution (SPIE) / XP50 including task planning, technical inputs and reviews, coordination of ES support, communication with Chief Engineers, Element Discipline Lead Engineer (EDLEs), and SPIE Element Lead Systems Engineer (ELSE) as needed.

The selected candidate will assist efforts to close technical issues and will be responsible for developing and reviewing SLS documentation such as drawings, design specifications, interface control documents, and verification specifications.

Primary responsibility for this position includes providing systems engineering support, supporting technical risk management inputs/mitigations, supporting project technical reviews/working groups, technical data integration, team coordination and general technical support and developing/maintaining systems level requirement documents for the sub-element.

  • Coordinate with Secondary/Payload Integration Manager (SPIMs) on required inputs & outputs, develop / manage schedule of secondary payloads tasks and deliverables.
  • Support technical inputs and reviews, and product development.
  • Maintain & update as required Secondary Payloads System Engineering products (SP Accommodations Hardware Requirements Documents), assist SPIMs in producing requirements compliance input for payload specific ICDs, support verification planning for payloads and SPDS systems, including V&V for Secondary Payloads.
  • Assist other discipline groups responsible for Secondary Payloads dispenser, Avionics Unit, and Ground Support requirements documentation and verification.



Qualifications

Qualifications:

Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering or related technical discipline is required. Degree from an ABET accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 10 years of experience, Masters with at least 15 years of experience, or BS with at least 18 years of experience.

Required Experience

  • General knowledge of NASA Systems Engineering principles and processes.
  • Ability to lead an integrated team in technical reviews and working groups both in person and using communications tools such as WebEx, Skype and TEAMS.
  • Familiar with configuration\data management concepts and tools such as Windchill.
  • Familiar with risk management concepts and tools.
  • Communicates efficiently, and effectively in English, both orally, and written.

Desired Experience

  • Demonstrated experience of working in a cross functional dynamic ever changing work environment and have a strong ability to multitask.
  • Previous work supporting SLS components or Payloads Integration on other programs including ground operations and/or testing.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (0 to 20%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues. Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks. Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities.

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30 - 4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
