We're looking for an Senior Engineering Manager to help own our design systems across our products, lead the team defining and building these systems, and be an advocate of design/technical craftsmanship across our design and engineering organizations.

On the Design System team, we're designers and engineers who are building a greenfield design system and design tools for use at United Healthcare Group, Optum, and affiliated companies across all our platforms on Web, iOS, and Android. Our goal is to support every product that the organization builds for our members, helping make delightful user experience across the entire platform! We oversee the design language of Optum and United Healthcare Group, defining the visual, interaction, and motion foundations that are shared through our design system of components, patterns, and guidelines. We make this design language real through our code libraries, tools, and automation that ensure every engineer builds with a high-quality UI infrastructure.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of design technologists (engineers focused on design systems) responsible for the Orion Design System. Managing your team includes:
    • Mentorship - You'll coach your team, providing both project feedback and career guidance, and create opportunities for your team members to grow
    • Hiring - You'll partner with our recruiting team to find, attract, interview, and hire new design engineers for your team, across systems roles and including design-focused engineering specialists
    • Cross-Team Leadership - You'll work with your peers in Engineering, Product Design, Product Management, User Research, and more to determine a shared vision and roadmap for our design system
    • Champion of Quality - You'll work with your team and the broader organization to oversee and act as an advocate of design craft and quality throughout our products - aiming to guide, influence, and improve future quality through systems. You'll also uphold technical craft through the work your team does to ensure a robust, thoughtful UI infrastructure
    • Technical Strategy - You'll contribute to the strategy of our future design systems work, ensuring that it's focused on making an impact on our products and built in a robust, maintainable, scalable, and flexible manner
    • Hands-On Execution - As a technical leader, we aim to hire folks that are excited and driven to contribute at the lowest level of detail. And especially our design system, we're looking for technical, detail-oriented people that wouldn't shy away from jumping in to be hands on working on the code
    • Collaboration with Design Systems Design - You'll work together with a design manager counterpart and design systems design leadership to ensure that there's alignment and quality between your team and their counterparts
  • Report into the Senior Director, Engineering on our Design Systems team

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of engineering experience
  • 2+ years of experience leading successful design systems, UI infrastructure, or UI engineering teams
  • Experience working on large-scale projects across multiple teams
  • Managed a team of 3 or more software engineers


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience building and shipping design systems across iOS, Android, or Web platforms
  • Experience with building and implementing a Design System
  • Experience with Figma and Story Book
  • Experience recruiting and retaining outstanding software engineers

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $97,300 to $176,900. The salary range for Connecticut / Nevada residents is $97,300 to $176,900. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
