About the Digital ETI (Emerging Technologies & Innovation) Team:
H-E-B is looking for leaders to advance further our ability to inspire, innovate, and drive transformative change through the discovery, learning, and implementation of technologies that will improve the lives of our customers and Partners. The Digital Emerging Technology and Innovation team is the technical arm charged with supporting these endeavors. As a member of the team, you will partner with the business to ideate, pilot, and potentially roll out technologies to enhance the partner and customer journey. This team will have the opportunity to work with machine learning, computer vision, IoT, wayfinding, sensor fusion, and many other bleeding-edge technologies. This is an exciting opportunity to join a new team on an inspiring mission.
As a Manager, Software Engineering, you will:

• Be involved in managing multiple projects simultaneously, where typically the scope of each project is POC or pilot, as opposed to typical application development
• Support the team's charter by exercising your skills in developing and implementing repeatable and scalable processes within the team
• Work closely with stakeholders from product and design, and other engineering leaders, to provide high-quality, repeatable technology delivery for the digital engineering organization
• Provide leadership across all aspects of development to maintain a high bar for technology, people, and process
• Be responsible for delivering a quality product that can be taken from Pilot/prototype to production with minimal additional effort

Management, Design & Development

• Directly supervise individual contributors or other Managers
• Coach / mentor others in engineering techniques, processes, and new technologies; enable others to succeed; empower team members to be autonomous, fast, and effective
• Manage all HR responsibilities for your team, including pay planning, promotions, expenses, and leave
• Understand/foster the value of radical candor when having 1:1 conversations
• Lead large initiatives within the team, including technical design/delivery of complex features across multiple systems as H-E-B improves the customer and Partner user experiences
• Help grow Digital Engineering by driving the execution of organization-wide activities
• Develop technical roadmaps and lead engineers across one or more squads to deliver initiatives; apply your understanding of the fundamentals of the business to ensure the technical roadmap aligns with business opportunities
• Recommend improvements to overall application system design, architecture, security, scalability, reliability, and performance
• Identify ways to improve codebases, solutions to complex problems; effectively propose paths forward to drive outcomes
• Recommend changes to processes and tools at the group/department level based on industry standards, patterns, and practices
• Diagnose/troubleshoot extremely complex issues
• Create documentation and training related to technology stacks and standards
• Jump down to IC-level duties, when needed, to provide guidance on code reviews or pull requests

Who You Are:

• You have a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or comparable formal training, certification, or work experience
• You have 4+ years as a Software Engineer with successful proven leadership (of small teams of 4 - 8) experience
• You have expert knowledge of system architecture and design patterns
• You have an expert understanding of development methodologies and processes , including and not limited to SAFe/Agile processes and Kanban
• You understand cross-tech stacks and scalability and reliability implications
• You have experience working with and around vendor solutions, including integration and customization of vendor solutions
• You have experience with common software engineering tools such as Git, JIRA, Confluence, etc.
• You approach problem-solving holistically and consider solutions through a combination of technology and processes
• You can coordinate work for a group of engineers on major initiatives
• You have skills in multiple languages, technologies, and frameworks and can quickly onboard to projects in minimal time
• Due to the diverse nature of the projects, a combination of the following is preferred, but all are not required: Java/JSP/swing/angular/React/Node/PHP, C/C++, Python/Golang/etc., Google and AWS architecture and design, Linux, ML, ETL/messaging/orchestration, monitoring and alerting tools, CI/CD, databases, containers, identity and data security, computer vision, mobile (Android/iOS) app development, BI/analytics, IoT/RFID devices and sensors/biometrics/hardware design among other bleeding edge technologies
• Your experience in architecture/design/engineering management within the Retail or related industries is preferred
