About the Global Search team

The Global Search team is focused on bringing world class search functionality to GitLab.com and self-managed instances with Elasticsearch. It mainly had backend engineers in the past. Now, they are looking for a frontend engineer to help define and build an easy and pleasant user interface for their customers.

Some of the work the team has been doing which may give you more insight into this position

  1. Elasticsearch lessons learnt for Advanced Global Search
  2. Improve the sorting and search experience for the project and group dropdowns in global search
  3. Insights from code search research for Global Search
  4. Global Search - Convert UI from HAML to Vue

 

What you can expect in a Frontend Engineer role at GitLab:

  • You'll help improve the overall experience of our product through improving the quality of the Frontend features
  • You’ll help identify areas of improvements in the code base and help contribute to make it better
  • You’ll work alongside the UX team, the Backend Engineering team and Product Managers to iterate on new features within the GitLab product.
  • You’ll learn, collaborate and teach other Frontend Engineers. Everyone can contribute something new to the team regardless of how long they’ve been in the industry.
  • You’ll fix prioritized issues from the issue tracker. These are typically bugs listed in a GitLab issue with an attached severity and priority label.
  • You'll write high quality code to complete scheduled direction issues assigned by your frontend engineering manager.
  • You’ll contribute to and follow our workflow process, alongside the rest of the Frontend team and the GitLab community as a whole.

You should apply if:

  • You have prior experience building Frontend web applications
  • You have a solid understanding in core web and browser concepts (eg. how does JavaScript handle asynchronous code)
  • You have working knowledge of when and how to make your code scale effectively
  • You are proactive in taking ownership of tasks and take them to completion
  • You desire to learn and continually give and receive feedback effectively
  • You have a solid understanding of CSS, semantic HTML and core JavaScript concepts.
  • You have experience working with Vue.js
  • Our values of collaboration, results, efficiency, diversity, iteration, and transparency (CREDIT) resonate with you.

Nice to have:

  • You have experience contributing to open source software
  • You have experience optimizing code and look for ways to resolve performance issues
  • You have experience with writing automation tests using Jest, Karma, Jasmine, Mocha, AVA, tape, etc.
  • You have experience using a modern state management library (Vuex, Redux, etc)
  • You have working knowledge of Ruby on Rails, Haml, and other tools in the stack
  • You have experience using Git in a professional/workplace environment
  • You have working knowledge of Elasticsearch

For Colorado residents: The base salary range for this role’s listed level is currently $89,600 - $157,400 for Colorado residents only. Grade level and salary ranges are determined through interviews and a review of education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant, equity with other team members, and alignment with market data. See more information on our benefits and equity. Sales roles are also eligible for incentive pay targeted at up to 100% of the offered base salary.
