Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of professional experience in engineering, including experience with technical innovation and managing software engineering teams.
  • Experience in creating, executing, and delivering software development.



Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with machine learning products/features.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire teams to build software supporting user and partner teams' most critical needs, and experience building a healthy, sustainable organizational culture.
  • Understanding of consumer products landscape and consumer features with a large user base.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to influence without authority.
  • Confidence in an environment of cross-functional collaboration, partnership, and leadership.
  • Desire for direct involvement in setting technical strategy and assuring high-quality execution, technology and technical depth to uncover root causes of complex technical problems and provide guidance on solving them.



About the job

The YouTube Vertical Discovery, Search and Learning engineering team is responsible for YouTube content recommendation in specific verticals, and the overall teaching and learning environment on YouTube.As the Engineering Director, you will lead three teams in NYC: discovery and search of live streaming content and content from small creators; YouTube search responsibility and data model and insight team; YouTube Learning team. The first two teams develop and deploy machine learning, data processing, backend infrastructure and front-end client development to support their missions. The YouTube Learning team is responsible for building features and products to support both creators who teach and viewers who are looking to learn, in both professional and non-professional contexts.

You will collaborate closely with multiple teams within YouTube including Product Management, engineering, and other Google partner teams. You will also provide mentorship and coaching to the senior leads on the teams, and help influence the agenda of other partner teams.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, lead, and coach a large group of engineers to drive execution and continue the success rate of the team.
  • Develop technical strategies to advance state-of-art in machine learning, software infrastructure and front-end client development in order to grow multiple YouTube top-level metrics.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers from YouTube creators, YouTube core experience, and the YouTube community organization.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders in engineering, product, and operations across multiple Product Areas to deliver a compelling and innovative product offering.
  • Focus on engineering and product excellence, as well as people development, to grow the next generation of leaders.
