Description
As an Electronics Senior Engineer in the Aftermarket Enhancements Engineering group, you will be responsible for ICS Aftermarket Enhancements products with a strong focus electrical and electronic hardware system integration. This position is responsible for senior engineering support of launch requirements, design, development, validation and release of components and systems for the Aftermarket. Systems include electronic controls consisting of standard Caterpillar ECMs with software modifications as well as custom designed modules for specialized applications. This involves engineering development of production Aftermarket Kits designed for dealer installation on customer machine and engine fleets. The team, based in Mossville, executes a range of projects with short NPI cycles of typically less than one year and often has direct interaction with dealers and customers. The work group has an innovative environment with a continuous push for unique solutions for customers and a broad portfolio of projects across multiple product lines. Responsibility includes many new development projects and the current product portfolio including: Energy & Transportation Products, Electric Power Control Systems, and Caterpillar Engine Monitoring Systems. This position will require strong component development and system integration skills. Strong team interaction skills as well as written and verbal communications are a must. This will include working with our Aftermarket partner teams located in India and China as well as other internal process partner and customer groups.
Additional tasks will include supporting and often leading team activities including FMEAs, Field Technician Risk Assessments, validation plans, and visits to customer sites as needed. This position will support project and design reviews as well as other team meetings.
Job Duties
For Caterpillar, digital means using technology to extract data from our machines and engines and transform it into valuable recommendations or "insights," to help customers make better, more informed decisions and help Caterpillar make robust products with the lowest total ownership cost. Our products generate and process large amounts of data from sensors, on-board models, and control algorithms in real-time creating real-world machine usage information. Electronic Components/Platforms are key enabling technologies for the overall digital strategy. Key electronic component technologies provide the foundational technology building blocks that enable valuable data to be gathered from machines and engines. The Sr. Electronic Components/Platforms Engineer position develops, improves, and troubleshoots electronic/electrical hardware used in an array of engine and machine systems. This generally includes the development of product requirements, analysis and simulation, electronic component selection, schematic/layout development, and platform verification and validation. Some or all of these activities may be performed in partnership with a supplier including the manufacturing plan and process development. This position performs complex analysis work, identifies design problems, and resolves problems. Although this position may be the transition from individual contributor to team leadership, the major focus of the job is on technical delivery. Decisions made by this position may affect the project team and its delivery of the project. In order to develop the platforms effectively, this position must work closely with Engine and Machine System/Subsystem team members to understand the application requirements and performance needs. For some components, the platform includes embedded software as a key deliverable, so coordination of this activity with the appropriate teams is required. A strong knowledge of analog and digital hardware design and/or product application is necessary to develop robust solutions and assess the application suitability as well as a thorough understanding of the mechanical and environmental requirements for the application. In addition to new development, current production hardware will be maintained and supported through the platform lifecycle including obsolescence management. The position responsibilities include a strong focus on quality through simulation, analysis, verification, and validation testing at the component level, subsystem, and system level. Advanced troubleshooting and analysis skills are needed to resolve complex development and field issues and to improve overall performance and cost. Incumbents may be expected to bear significant responsibility for completion of a project with major focus on delivery. The Sr. Electronic Components/Platforms Engineer is expected to provide technical leadership and potentially training to new staff members. Good communication is expected for technical status updates, component reviews, and when working closely with other internal and external teams in multiple geographic locations and organizations. Keeping up with industry trends and new technology breakthroughs is essential and requires continuous learning through self/internet study.
Basic Qualifications
Requires a Bachelor's degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum (Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical, or Other Engineering majors) plus 5-7 years of experience in embedded electronic hardware development or a master degree in an Engineering curriculum plus 3-5 years of experience in embedded electronic hardware development.
