About the Role

As a Tissue Engineer I within the Translational Biology department, you will be part of a team of data scientists, translational biologists, and engineers building a powerful computational platform for advancing the research and development of new medicines. You will work on the BiowireTM platform, which generates biofidelic engineered human cardiac and skeletal muscle tissues. BiowireTM is a cornerstone of the larger Opal Computational PlatformTM which evaluates the safety and efficacy of drugs in various models at a decreased cost as compared to human trials, and ethically as compared to animal testing. Successful candidates will work with a diverse set of scientists and engineers in ways that cut across traditional industry boundaries.

What You’ll Do…

  • Manufacture platform components for use in cardiac and skeletal tissue assays in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and drawing specifications.

  • Assemble electro-mechanical systems and test equipment for tissue stimulation.

  • Complete quality control inspections on platform components; maintaining outcome logs and generating reports as necessary.

  • Generate SOPs, protocols, and batch documents as needed.

  • Monitor, document, and manage inventory.

  • Create and modify CAD models, CAM data, and technical drawings from sketches and notes.

  • Work closely with senior and staff engineers to create prototypes, test designs, and report results as well as troubleshoot failure modes.

  • Conduct experiments with mechanical testers to characterize polymer tissue scaffolds.

What You Bring...

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical or biomedical engineering.
  • 1+ years of experience working in a commercial manufacturing lab, bioengineering lab, and/or cleanroom preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and CAD software (SolidWorks) required.
  • Proficiency with Minitab, MATLAB, KNIME Analytics, Python and/or C++ is a plus.
  • Exceptionally keen attention to detail with excellent dexterity required to assemble microscopic precision parts.
  • Execute tasks to technical standards and maintain accurate documentation, specifically in compliance with ISO 13485 and/or 9001.
  • Must be a cross‐functional team player, but also be able to work independently, i.e. able to achieve results as an individual and in collaboration with colleagues.
  • Creativity and accountability with a talent to effectively brainstorm, rigorously probe novel concepts and quickly reach solutions through a strong foundation in engineering fundamentals.

You May Also Bring...

  • A passion for making things with hands-on experience in a technical craft, personal projects, or hobbies.
  • Experience or interest in microfluidics, electro-mechanical, and/or optical systems.
  • Rapid prototyping experience with Ultimaker©, Prusa©, and/or Formlabs© 3D printers as well as Shapeoko CNC routers.
  • Familiarity with single board microcontrollers such as Arduino.
  • Experience in using test and measurement equipment, such as oscilloscopes, function generators, and multimeters.
  • Experience working in sterility in a Biosafety Level 2 laboratory environment.
  • Experience in packaging, labeling, and sterilization of medical products.
