About the role

MUBI is growing, and we’re looking for a Mid–Senior Backend Engineer to help scale our product. You’ll tackle challenges across APIs, payments, search, streaming, data, and security.

Ruby on Rails is at our core, so experience here matters. This is your chance to make a real impact in a lean, ambitious team operating in the same world as Netflix and Amazon— with the freedom to explore new ideas and approaches to champion great cinema for millions of film lovers worldwide.

Where you'll have impact:
  • Design, develop, and maintain robust backend services using Ruby on Rails and relational databases

  • Build and optimize APIs that power our web, mobile, and TV applications across global markets

  • Implement and improve distributed systems using ElasticSearch, DynamoDB, Redis, and Sidekiq

  • Contribute to the modernization of our architecture, including migrating monolithic components to container-based systems like EKS

  • Develop and optimize billing, payment processing, and subscription management systems

What you'll bring:

Essential Requirements:
  • 2+ years of professional backend development experience

  • Strong proficiency in Ruby on Rails and relational databases

  • Experience with distributed systems and caching strategies (Redis, ElasticSearch)

  • Solid understanding of API design and RESTful principles

  • Experience with background job processing using Sidekiq or similar queue systems

  • Knowledge of AWS services and cloud infrastructure

  • A strong enthusiasm for quick learning and adapting to new technologies

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative environment

Desired skills:
  • Knowledge of video streaming technologies (DASH, HLS, DRM) will be a significant advantage

  • Experience with serverless architectures and managed services on AWS

  • Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies

  • Infrastructure as code expertise (Chef, Terraform, or similar)

  • Understanding of CDN infrastructure and content delivery optimization

  • Experience with payment processing and billing systems

  • Experience building and maintaining Ruby gems and libraries

Nice to have:
  • Experience with video streaming (DASH, HLS, DRM).

  • Knowledge of CDN infrastructure and content delivery.

  • Background in containerization and orchestration (Kubernetes/EKS).

  • Infrastructure as code expertise (Chef, Terraform, etc.).

  • High-volume payment processing and billing experience.

  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.

We want to make cinema accessible to everyone. We believe people from different backgrounds bring different ideas that foster innovation and engagement, allowing us to attract great people to develop the best experience for our users.
