Position Summary

The BioProcess Research and Development (BRD) organization is responsible for developing and manufacturing large molecule drug substance in support of Lilly’s drug development pipeline. BRD Automation supports the BRD mission by developing automation solutions and providing process control engineering for the control of bioprocess systems from 5L benchtop to 5000L GMP production scale as well as process support systems.

The BRD automation engineer will enable information and data flow by leveraging Process Automation and IT Technologies with a focus on data historians and analytics. The role works with scientists and engineers to establish data management architecture, and provide system administration oversight that enables process development, clinical supply manufacture, and process tech transfer to commercial sites. This role includes change control implementation, deviation investigation, troubleshooting process control systems, network architecture support, and off-hours support. The role supports laboratory, K360 pilot plant and GMP manufacturing areas. The position will serve as the subject matter expert for the AVEVA PI systems and will provide backup support and system administration for process control system platforms such as DeltaV, Unicorn, and Rockwell.

Key Objectives / Deliverables

  • Data Historians – Provide support for the BRD data historian platform and drive value and productivity by developing and implementing solutions using the AVEVA PI System.

  • Data Integration – Develop robust and innovative solutions enabling scientists and engineers to utilize data to drive improvement decisions, identify issues, and utilize advanced analytics.

  • Innovation – Bring external and innovation focus, combined with a strong understanding of business objectives, emerging technologies and IT/Automation applications to define the future state and vision for development.

  • Process Understanding – Obtain and leverage knowledge of the BRD business processes and technologies to influence future application and business direction.

  • Process Improvement/Optimization – Utilize data analytics to find, develop, and implement automation solutions driving productivity gains, safety improvements, quality improvements, and other process improvements.

  • Project Delivery – Lead design and delivery of local projects. Provide appropriate project execution support. Ensure that solutions are compliant to minimize regulatory risk to the business. Oversight of contractors assisting in the delivery of solutions is required.

  • System Support – Provide technical support for process control system platforms (e.g. AVEVA PI, DeltaV, Unicorn, Rockwell) as well as perform system support activities (e.g. performance monitoring, cyber security), and network architecture layering support. Lead investigation of automation related deviations. Responsible for ensuring that lifecycle plans are developed and executed for automation systems.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Complete documentation and testing activities to ensure that systems are maintained in the appropriate state of validation for use.

  • Lead investigation of automation related deviations and process upsets.

  • Oversight of contractors assisting in the delivery of automation solutions.

  • Provide project management and technical leadership for projects.

  • Ensure that automation solutions are compliant to minimize regulatory risk to the business.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science or related discipline with 3+ years' relevant experience

  • Experience in process data historian configuration and/or use

  • System administration and network communications experience

Additional Skills / Preferences
  • Experience on AVEVA PI Data Historian or other server-based historian systems

  • Familiarity with firewall configurations and network infrastructure

  • Experience working with validated systems in a GMP environment

  • Experience in supporting a manufacturing or development site

  • Experience working with one or more process automation systems (DeltaV, Unicorn, Rockwell)

  • Familiarity with data system architectures, operating systems, applications and interfaces

  • Strong problem identification and resolution skills

  • Excellent self-management skills

  • Ability to work well in a team environment incorporating a variety of functional relationships

Additional Information

  • Monday through Friday 8-hour days with flexibility to provide occasional off-hours support.

  • Tasks require entering manufacturing or laboratory areas which require wearing appropriate PPE.

  • Travel: 0-10%

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$66,000 - $149,600

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
