The Energy Marshal is responsible for ensuring the safe isolation, control, and management of all energy sources (electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, etc.) during construction, commissioning, and startup activities in the data center. This critical safety role prevents accidental energization, supports safe work practices, and protects personnel and equipment during high-risk phases of the project. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Oversee and enforce Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures for all energy sources on site 

  • Verify and approve energy isolation points before any work begins on electrical, mechanical, or other energized systems 

  • Conduct pre-work safety reviews and energy hazard assessments for construction and commissioning tasks 

  • Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, and commissioning teams to ensure proper de-energization and grounding 

  • Perform regular audits and inspections of LOTO devices, tags, and isolation procedures 

  • Maintain accurate records of all energy isolations, permits, and clearances 

  • Serve as the single point of control for re-energization of systems after work is completed and verified 

  • Stop any unsafe work related to energy sources immediately 

  • Train and coach site personnel on energy control procedures and best practices 

  • Participate in incident investigations involving energy-related events 

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, and company safety standards 

Qualifications

Qualifications & Requirements 

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in data center construction, industrial commissioning, or high-voltage electrical environments 

  • Strong working knowledge of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) programs and energy isolation procedures 

  • Familiarity with data center power systems, UPS, generators, switchgear, and mechanical systems 

  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification (preferred) 

  • NFPA 70E Electrical Safety certification (highly preferred) 

  • Proven ability to work independently and make critical safety decisions under pressure 

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills 

  • Detail-oriented with strong documentation and record-keeping abilities 

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical one-line drawings and P&IDs 

Preferred Skills 

  • Previous experience as an Energy Marshal, LOTO Coordinator, or Electrical Safety Supervisor 

  • Experience working on hyperscale or mission-critical data center projects 

  • Knowledge of commissioning processes (Level 3–5) and integrated systems testing 

Skills Required
