About Vehicle Motion Embedded Controls (VMEC)
The VMEC organization is at the center of any technology that enables every GM vehicle to move forward, go backward, turn, change height, and stop. VMEC is responsible for the development and deployment of complex embedded controllers and software products to a variety of propulsion and suspension/steering control systems utilizing the principles of Agile. These controllers and software products support cutting edge features, such as raising and lower the vehicle for performance and luxury ride applications as well as state of the art steering capabilities. The race is on to deliver engaging and meaningful in-vehicle experiences! You can flex your teamwork muscles as you will be tasked with working with several other areas of engineering within GM.

This role will enable you to have a direct impact on ICE and EV GM vehicles.
The VMEC Steering, Suspension, and Performance Race Software team is seeking creative, highly motivated, agile problem solvers who have a passion and expertise in embedded controls and software. The selected candidates will collaborate within and across engineering teams to define, design, implement, and test controls and diagnostic algorithms used in our latest Steering and Suspension systems. These systems will be deployed to a wide variety of GM's exciting upcoming ICE and EV products. The selected candidates will also be able to influence the direction of the ART and develop/coach junior engineers in the team.
What You'll do:
  • Lead development of controls designs utilizing Lean-Agile principles
  • Develop supervisory controls and diagnostics for all new steering and suspension height controls and diagnostics using innovative design thinking and leveraging state-of-the-art technology.
  • Work closely and collaborate with Steering and Suspension calibration teams to design robust algorithms that meet vehicle system requirements.
  • Conduct analysis on and prototype design changes utilizing tools (Matlab/Simulink, INCA/MDA, GMSIM, other)
  • Lead the development and review of algorithm FMEA and analyze failure modes to enable robust algorithm design which meets safety requirements
  • Define system behavior under fault conditions and incorporate learnings into production algorithms
  • Ensure algorithm design adheres to all safety and government requirements & regulations
  • Lead technical workgroups to decompose the requirements into controls design by working with Systems Engineers, System Architects or Technical Specialists to understand vehicle, sub-system, and behavioral requirements.
  • Support the Scrum Manager with feature decomposition into individual work tasks and participate in the User Story elaboration. Contribute to ensuring that the definition of done and acceptance criteria are well defined for all features/stories
  • Communicate and work with the Scrum to ensure the design is comprehended and the team is aligned with the design intent
  • Support or assist the Scrum team as required in implementing cohesive, efficient, testable and sustainably maintainable software components
  • Provide information as required to Calibration procedures and Behavior Test Specifications (BTS)
  • Leverage AI to enhance the efficiency and quality of all work
  • Verify Functional Performance of controls designs
  • Work with Scrum team to support development of feature or component Behavioral Technical Specification (BTS)
  • Support the team with robustness and BTS testing as required on either the SIL, HIL or Vehicle
  • Develop and execute test cases at the unit, and higher levels of integration within the overall architecture (e.g. POD and Solution).
  • Review test results & incorporate necessary modifications into controls design
  • Host algorithm design reviews and ensure performance metrics are achieved based on test data
  • Verify acceptance criteria are met through test & data analysis
  • Provide feedback to hardware teams of issues identified during design & data analysis to ensure robustness
  • Lead issue resolution initiatives by working closely with peers to investigate and resolve issues found, incorporate lessons learned into the design
  • Document lessons learned and Best Practices for controls design implementation
  • Produce innovative methods to make our work more efficient
  • Utilize Problem Resolution Tracking System (PRTS)
  • Document Intellectual Property
  • Participate in scrum and ART ceremonies

Additional Description
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other applicable Engineering focuses.
  • Minimum 5+ years Engineering experience with proven technical and professional skills in job-related area
  • Knowledge of software development in C Programming.
  • DFSS Black Belt Certified
  • Knowledge of Simulink, MATLAB, DOORS, GIT environment(s); Jira
  • Knowledge of sub-system integration including design, implementation, and testing
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with sometimes incomplete/changing requirements.
  • Analytical problem-solving skills where problems are unusual and difficult.
  • Demonstrated honesty, integrity, and trust. Lead by example.
  • Demonstrated examples of collaboration and positive relationship management

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)
  • MS in Engineering with focus on controls.
  • Knowledge of Suspension Height Control systems or Steering Control Systems
  • Knowledge of integration testing
  • Knowledge of Behavior Driven Development and Test-Driven Development
  • Experience with C++ programming
