Moon Five’s hardware, software, and deployment optimizations allows us to skip the costly infrastructure upgrade and long installation cycles, enabling rapid EV charging adoption today while setting the stage for future energy services like load balancing, DERs, and affordable backup energy.
Moon Five is a Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) portfolio company, and participated in Berkeley Skydeck, Creative Destruction Labs, and Cleantech Open and is an Energy Power Research Institute’s (EPRI) Incubatenergy Finalist.
Job Description
We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to help develop cutting-edge infrastructure hardware for EV charging and intelligent power management systems in multi-family residential buildings. This role combines advanced electrical engineering expertise with hands-on leadership to drive product development from concept through production deployment. You'll work at the intersection of high-power electronics, mixed-signal design, and sustainable energy infrastructure, helping to accelerate the transition to electric transportation in urban environments.
Key Responsibilities
Lead electrical engineering projects for mixed signal PCB design for rapid prototyping and high volume production
Execute complete product development lifecycle including schematic design, PCB layout, prototype bring-up, testing, and design for manufacturing (DFM)
Manage supplier relationships and engineering contracts, including component sourcing, vendor qualification, and manufacturing partner coordination
Drive products through National Recognized Test Lab (UL, ETL, YUV, CSA) safety listing processes, prepare technical documentation and coordination with laboratories
Support field deployments by troubleshooting installation issues, providing technical guidance to installation teams, and implementing design improvements based on field feedback
Collaborate on the design of mechanical enclosures and thermal management for outdoor and indoor installations, considering environmental ratings (NEMA/IP)
Collaborate with firmware team to integrate embedded control systems, communication protocols (Modbus, CAN, Ethernet, LoRa, LTE), cloud connectivity features, and hardware telemetry
Conduct design reviews, mentor junior engineers, manage contractor relationships and establish engineering best practices and documentation standards
Qualifications
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, or related technical field and experience
4+ years of experience in electronics design with focus on mixed signal or embedded power electronics applications
Proven track record designing and bringing to scale power control systems, preferably in automotive, industrial, or renewable energy applications
Extensive experience with mixed-signal PCB design using professional EDA tools (Altium Designer, KiCad, or similar)
Deep understanding of power semiconductor devices (IGBTs, Mechanical Relays, MOSFETs, SiC/GaN devices)
Deep understanding of digital ICs, microcontrollers, microprocessors, and digital interference
Hands-on experience with test equipment including oscilloscopes, power analyzers, and electronic loads
Strong project management skills with experience working on cross-functional engineering teams
What Makes You Stand Out
Experience with high voltage (up to 480V) and high power (up to 40kW+) electronics systems for EV charging infrastructure
Design and develop industrial-grade power electronics including bidirectional power delivery and monitoring, smart load management systems, and calibration and testing of hardware
Experience with EV charging standards (SAE J1772, IEC 62196-2, NACS) and communication protocols (ISO 15118, OCPP)
Experience with safety standards and regulatory compliance (UL 1741, UL 2231-1/-2, UL 2594, UL 3141, or UL 9741, IEC 61851, NEC Article 625)
Previous experience at EV charging, automotive OEMs, distributed energy technologies, demand response technologies, or renewable energy infrastructure
Track record of successfully launching products that achieved NRTL listing and FCC certification within aggressive timelines
Experience scaling manufacturing from prototype to high-volume production (>100 units/month)
Experience with mechanical design software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360)
Knowledge of building electrical systems, NEC code compliance, and electrical contractor workflows
Strong communication skills
