About the Opportunity
Shermco Canada is seeking an experienced SCADA Engineer to design, program, integrate, commission, and support SCADA and industrial automation systems.
This is a remote position open to qualified candidates residing in an approved location within Canada. The successful candidate will collaborate with customers, engineering teams, field personnel, contractors, and vendors to deliver reliable automation solutions for electrical power and industrial infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities- Design, program, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot SCADA systems, PLCs, HMIs, RTUs, gateways, instrumentation, edge devices, and industrial networks.
- Configure and support Ignition SCADA applications, including Perspective HMI, scripting, alarming, Tag Historian, reporting, and data visualization.
- Develop SCADA specifications, network drawings, I/O lists, control narratives, commissioning records, and operational handover documentation.
- Lead or support Factory Acceptance Testing, Site Acceptance Testing, systems integration, commissioning, troubleshooting, and operational handover.
- Review electrical drawings, P&IDs, control schematics, network diagrams, communication architectures, and panel designs.
- Coordinate with customers, internal teams, contractors, and vendors to meet technical requirements and project schedules.
- Identify opportunities to improve SCADA standards, cybersecurity, system performance, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
- Complete work in accordance with applicable safety, electrical, regulatory, customer, and Shermco requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer, Automation, or a related engineering discipline. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
- Five or more years of experience in SCADA design, programming, systems integration, commissioning, or troubleshooting.
- Experience with Ignition SCADA, including Perspective HMI, Python or Jython scripting, alarming, Tag Historian, and reporting.
- Hands-on experience configuring, programming, and troubleshooting PLCs, RTUs, industrial controllers, gateways, and edge devices.
- Knowledge of industrial networks, fibre optics, VPNs, remote access, OT communications, and protocols such as OPC UA, DNP3, Modbus TCP/RTU, and RS-485.
- Ability to interpret electrical single-line diagrams, P&IDs, control schematics, network diagrams, and I/O lists.
- Strong technical documentation, communication, problem-solving, and project coordination skills.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating with geographically dispersed teams.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada and able to travel within Canada and the United States, subject to applicable border-entry requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with electrical substations, protection and control systems, three-phase power, or power system automation.
- Experience with SEL protection relays, RTACs, AcSELerator software, Ignition Edge, Opto 22, CODESYS, or Red Lion products.
- Knowledge of solar power, battery energy storage systems, distributed energy resources, or renewable power generation.
- Experience with Linux operating systems and industrial or operational technology cybersecurity practices.
- Experience with SCADA panel design, telecommunications, CCTV, access control, water or wastewater systems, pumping systems, utilities, data centres, or industrial facilities.
- Experience delivering customer-facing engineering or systems integration projects.
- Ignition, cybersecurity, automation, networking, or project management certifications.
Work Environment and Travel
- This position may be performed remotely from an approved location within Canada.
- Travel of up to 20% within Canada and the United States is required based on customer and project needs.
- Travel may include overnight stays and occasional work outside regular business hours during commissioning, outages, or critical system events.
- A valid driver’s licence may be required when driving is an essential part of a project assignment.
- Site-specific travel, safety, and access requirements will be communicated in advance.
