Summary Objective

The Electrical Controls Engineer is responsible for developing, programming, and integrating the control systems and automation logic that run our custom modular chillers. This role focuses on programmable logic controller (PLC) programming, human-machine interface (HMI) development, and establishing robust communication networks between our chillers and the overarching data center management systems (BMS/EPMS).

Responsibilities include creating control sequence of operations, designing low-voltage control panel layouts, defining instrumentation integration (sensors, actuators, transmitters), and ensuring seamless software-to-hardware communication.

Essential Functions

  • Controls & PLC Programming: Develop, write, and debug PLC ladder logic and structured text codes for chiller plant automation systems (e.g., Rockwell Automation, Siemens, or Carel).
  • HMI Design: Program and design intuitive Human-Machine Interface (HMI) screens to allow clear monitoring and operation of modular chiller variables on-site.
  • Network Integration: Set up, configure, and troubleshoot industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, BACnet, Ethernet/IP, and Profibus.
  • Control Panel Layouts: Design low-voltage control circuits, sensor loops, wire routing, and digital/analog I/O schematics.
  • System Integration Support: Assist manufacturing and commissioning teams during the electrical startup and initial "dry-loop" software loading of the modular control panel.
  • Travel Requirement: Travel to customer sites for critical control integration, testing, or field startups may be required.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Competencies

  • Automation Focus: Strong passion for industrial automation, HVAC control sequences, and thermodynamic process controls.
  • Software & Coding: Familiarity with programming languages (such as Ladder Logic, Functional Block Diagrams, or Structured Text) and HMI development software.
  • Standards & Schematics: Ability to read, interpret, and design electrical schematics and control P&IDs in accordance with UL 508A and NEC standards.
  • Communication Protocols: Basic knowledge of industrial networks (TCP/IP, serial communication, and client/server architectures).
  • Self-Starter: Ability to troubleshoot and trace signal paths systematically from software command to physical field device.
