DEPARTMENT: Music 

PROGRAM: Eisner Intergenerational Music 

REPORTS TO: Eisner Intergenerational Music Program Manager, with a dotted line to the Music Department Director

SALARY: $50 per hour 

FLSA: Non-exempt 

HOURS: Part-time, Up to 6 hours per week, for 44 weeks/year. On occasion, up to 8 hours per week. Hours are subject to change with the academic calendar and/or program needs.  Rehearsals will be 1.5- 2 hours per week.

THE HEART OF LOS ANGELES INTERGENERATIONAL MUSIC PROGRAM 

The Intergenerational Music Program, made possible by our partnership with The Eisner Foundation, brings together singers, big band, and orchestral musicians of all ages across intermediate and advanced skill levels in a multicultural environment that is representative of our great city. Performers benefit from interactions with one another as they progress toward a common goal of artistic excellence across a diverse musical repertoire. Our intergenerational music performances are designed to share the joy of music-making with performers and audience members through free community concerts at landmark venues. 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate Conductor, reporting to the Program Manager and Department Director, is responsible for giving instruction and guidance to program participants in their ensemble.  The Associate Conductor will provide a welcoming environment and facilitate communal and musical growth through rehearsal plans designed to realize the program's mission. The Associate Conductor will work closely with the Program Manager and Department Director to plan and execute the season’s rehearsals, culminating in at least one performance per semester. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

As Associate Conductor, responsibilities include (but are not limited to): 

  • Collaborating with the Department Director and Program Manager to create a positive environment for advancement and experiencing the joy of music-making together as a community 
  • Leading rehearsals for musicians of all ages 
  • Building a cohesive community among ensemble members, centered around  Heart of LA’s core values 
  • Offering advice to Section Mentors to ensure each section is meeting the same  standards of musical excellence and community cohesion 
  • Communicating with EIM musicians to understand each participant holistically
  • Preparing, communicating, and collaborating with other administrative staff to  ensure smooth programming 
  • Attending regular planning meetings and checkpoints with direct supervisors  and other program staff  
  • Collaborating with the Program Manager to ensure members are meeting compliance needs regarding attendance, background checks, etc. 
  • Collaborating with the Program Director to identify a repertoire and determine  clear expectations and goals that contribute to the ensemble’s musical  excellence 
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS) 

  • Four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience required; postgraduate degree or equivalent experience a plus 
  • Demonstrated excellent musicianship and artistry 
  • Experience giving musical instruction; communal setting preferred
  • Strong knowledge of repertoire, curriculum, and pedagogy related to your  instrument(s) 
  • Experience working with adults from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively  with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • A sense of humor is highly desirable 
  • Bilingual is a plus (Spanish/Korean)
  • Must pass CA Background Check

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The building environment does not provide air conditioning and heat in all areas. Outdoor work is expected in some cases.
