We are FlatWorld and we are disrupting the Higher Education textbook industry.

About the Company

Our mission is to bring textbook prices back down to earth. College professors are our customers. We make their lives easier by ensuring that their students have access to our high-quality, digital-first textbooks, at prices they can afford. We are growing rapidly.

About the Role

FlatWorld is seeking a proactive and collaborative Editorial Assistant to work directly with our Vice President of Editorial. In this role, you will be a vital driver of the manuscript development process—acting as the primary coordinator for peer reviews and ensuring manuscripts are ready for production.

This is a hybrid position based in our Boston office (requiring 2–3 days per week in-office). We view this as a foundational role; for a curious and motivated individual, this position offers significant growth opportunities and exposure to the core pillars of our publishing program.

RequirementsAbout You

This is an entry-level role designed for someone who is eager to launch a career in publishing. You are a detailed person by nature, but you also possess the intellectual curiosity to care about the content you are helping to produce.

  • Resourceful Problem-Solver: You enjoy the "puzzle" of logistics and are comfortable working both independently and as part of a tight-knit team.
  • Polished Communicator: You possess excellent verbal skills and a mastery of English-language business writing.
  • Organized & Diligent: You have a high degree of "follow-through" and can manage multiple moving parts without dropping the ball.
  • Tech-Fluent: You are comfortable learning new systems (like Salesforce and Airtable) and are proficient/advanced in Google Suite and Microsoft Office software.
Critical Functions
  • Peer Review Coordination: Solicit and manage the review process for proposals, drafts, and revisions. This includes processing payments and managing communications with reviewers.
  • Sales & Marketing Integration: Collaborate with the VP to extract impactful reviewer quotes for marketing, manage lead generation within Salesforce, and sync with sales reps on new opportunities. Work with reps on conference leads and assist in tracking sales for return on investment.
  • Manuscript & Production Support: Guide authors through the preparation process and facilitate the seamless transmission of final manuscripts into production.
  • Resource Development: Support the creation and benchmarking of instructor resources, including identifying and vetting potential freelance candidates.
  • Cross-Functional Liaison: Serve as a key point of contact between the Editorial, Marketing, Production, and Finance departments.
  • Project Benchmarking: Work with the Managing Editor to confirm benchmarks in prefaces and select supplemental resources.

Administrative Oversight: Handle essential office duties, including data entry, meeting coordination, and conference support.
