The Spruce is seeking an Editor to join our team! We are looking for a digitally-savvy content enthusiast with a passion for all things home–from design & decor, to DIY/projects, to cleaning and gardening.

The Editor will ideate, assign, and write content, and work with the growth team to refresh existing content and improve user experience–all to grow traffic, boost audience engagement, and drive revenue growth. Day-to-day, you will be responsible for content execution, including assigning and editing new content, topline editing all content, partnering with SEO on all elements of content quality, producing and publishing new content in our CMS, updating existing content, sourcing freelance writers with category expertise, and tracking and analyzing the success of all editorial efforts.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and deadline-driven; they are able to juggle the priorities and meet the deadlines that are crucial to the success of our business. They should also be highly organized, collaborative, and adept at using analytics and current SEO/traffic analytics best practices to create and update content and larger editorial initiatives that will help ensure we meet our goals.

In-office Expectations: This position is hybrid in-office, with the ability to work remotely for up to 2 days per week.

About The Positions/Contributions:

Weight% Accountabilities, Actions and Expected Measurable Results

50% Manage a team of freelance writers, from assigning winning pieces (based on data / research / trends) through to editing to make sure editorial best practices and brand positioning are met; meet content production goals.

20% Make updates to existing content for accuracy, helpfulness, style, substance, cultural sensitivity, content quality, and fulfillment of intent; replace outdated images, as needed.

10% Work closely with editorial and SEO teams on ad-hoc projects with the goal of improving content quality.

10% Collaborate with our social, newsletter, SEO, and related departments to promote brand / content

5% Track competitive landscape to identify trends and opportunities in the space.

5% Occasionally write or produce new content in-house.

The Role’s Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements

Education:

Undergraduate degree (preferably in journalism or communications), and/or equivalent experience.

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years experience developing and curating digital content for web, email, and social environments against business goals.

  • Experience with writing content optimized for driving traffic from multiple sources (search, Discover, email, social platforms, referring platforms) a plus

Specific Knowledge, Skills, Certifications and Abilities:

  • Proactive, flexible team player with a sense of humor and entrepreneurial energy, able to roll with the punches and take ownership in a fluid and fast-moving environment

  • Enthusiastic about The Spruce brand, and passionate about all things home – decorating, gardening, cleaning and organizing, DIY—and eager to share your knowledge with the world

  • Detail oriented and deadline focused with solid proofing skills. Strong copywriter, capable of writing engaging, lively headlines and blurbs. Experienced with editing and managing a large content pipeline.

  • Strong writing, research, and copy editing skills, with the ability to transform articles from mediocre to amazing and to coach freelancers to do the same

  • The ability to work quickly, efficiently, and independently and collaborate with both remote editorial workers and in-house editorial team members

  • Operating experience with content management systems and web analytics tools and experience using data and revenue goals to inform and develop digital strategies

  • The ability to use data to identify topics of interest to a wide audience

  • Consistently up to date with industry trends; able to identify topics of interest to a wide audience
