The Role
General Motors is dedicated to enhancing product safety through driver performance safety research relative to advanced crash avoidance technologies and crash protection strategies. The Global Product Safety, Systems, and Certification organization is looking for a proactive "Driver Performance Researcher" to lead safety strategy studies and develop requirements for active and passive safety features. This individual will be responsible for formulating, conducting, and analyzing field research and technology evaluations, benchmarking competitor products, and establishing a vision and roadmap of driver performance specifications for Active Safety and Automation systems.
The role supports advanced engineering and development of Active Safety and Automation systems via requirements development and integration support. Conducts analysis of active safety and automation opportunities and/or impacts. Interfaces with multiple internal and external entities (Safety, OnStar, Marketing, Planning, Alliance, Government, Universities, etc.). Ability to apply Human Factors expertise to new Active Safety, Driver Assistance, and Automated Driving systems. The role involves specifying and balancing requirements, defining, executing, and evaluating designs, as well as analyzing, developing, testing, and managing engineering projects, requiring a high degree of creativity, initiative, and independent judgment.
What You'll Do
- Champion Driver Performance Studies and Requirements Development for Active Safety and Driving Automation Systems.
- Provide technical leadership to cross-functionally drive Active Safety and Driving Automation needs into safety critical HMI designs through the Product, System and Design teams.
- Provide safety directions on how features should be implemented to interact with the customers to Product, System and Design leads.
- Generate technical solutions for current and new architectures.
- Develop and perform complex design analysis.
- Develop and evaluate engineering designs (including subsystems).
- Create and balance requirements across systems.
- Lead overall communication, coordination, and consultation with engineering departments and customers.
- Stay abreast of new technology and competitive products.
- Travels as required.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor degree in Human Factors / Experimental Psychology / Cognitive Science / Cognitive Psychology.
- 2+ years of related experience.
- Thorough knowledge of Human Factors approaches to conduct driver performance studies, procedures, and requirements development.
- Strong, highly developed oral and written communications skills.
- High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, and elicit work output.
- High level of analytical problem-solving skills where problems are very unusual and extremely difficult.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Masters or Ph.D. in Human Factors / Experimental Psychology / Cognitive Science / Cognitive Psychology.
- Two or more graduate level statistics courses
- Programming proficiency with the ability to use AI-assisted tools to write and refine code.
- DFSS Black Belt Certified.
