CNA's Claims Legal team is currently recruiting for a seasoned attorney with substantial experience in coverage and coverage litigation. Preference will be given to candidates who have deep, hands-on coverage opinion/coverage litigation experience in nation-wide complex claims involving loss types such as sexual abuse, talc, PFAS/AFFF, life sciences (including opioids), social media/video game addiction, pollution, food borne illnesses, silica, hair relaxers and other product exposures involving multiple claimants, and other general liability claims that span multiple policy periods. Our ideal candidate would also have a general understanding of legal and coverage issues across all lines of business that we support including Specialty, and Commercial First Party Property.
The incumbent will accept referrals of complex legal (including coverage) matters and other claims-related legal issues from CNA's commercial lines of business. As a member of our Claims Legal team, this individual will provide legal advice to the claims units that the team supports. Legal work will include legal research, policy analysis and analysis of complex coverage issues and will require the explanation of complex coverage issues. This individual will provide legal counsel, guidance, recommendations and periodic support for training initiatives and other special projects and will also include attendance at mediations (as legal counsel for the company) and other alternative dispute resolutions to support claims colleagues in matters involving disputed coverage issues.
This position is not an insurance defense/staff counsel position.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
An individual contributor with deep legal expertise in the insurance industry and in insurance coverage law. The individual will provide legal advice to the Company's internal claims line of business units on a broad range of complex coverage matters, both litigated and non-litigated. The individual will work closely with claim professionals, other members of the claim teams, and internal business partners to analyze complex coverage issues.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Provides legal advice to claims professionals (and claims managers/leaders) in connection with the most complex and/or severe commercial claims. Specific responsibilities will include providing legal advice, typically coverage opinions and legal support in connection with coverage litigation filed by and against the company.
- May have oversight for coverage litigation brought by or against the Company and its insureds.
- Will provide research, legal analysis, counsel and guidance on claim related issues in a dynamic environment in which you will collaborate with internal and external business partners.
- Will work independently in analyzing legal issues and supporting effective dispute resolution strategies.
- May be relied upon to attend mediations, arbitrations, appraisals, settlement meetings and conferences around the country as business needs warrant and in partnership with our claims professionals.
- Provide feedback and input to develop, present, and implement training initiatives to the claim organization.
May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Senior level knowledge of the theories, principles, practices and procedures of legal issues relating to claims, coverage, and litigation management within an insurance organization.
- Excellent technical and product-specific expertise, claims resolution skill, and knowledge of insurance and claims principles, practices and procedures.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills. Excellent negotiation, consulting and facilitation skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with all internal and external business partners.

Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree and J.D.
- Admission to the bar of at least one state required, along with the ability to obtain in-house counsel admission if required.
- Typically a minimum of eight to ten years of relevant legal experience with a proven track record of positive results.

The National base pay range for the Director Strategic Coverage Counsel role is $162,500 to $230,000. Salary determinations are based on variousfactors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
I n certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia , California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland , New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $87,000 to $178,000 annually.Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
