Director, Software Engineering

Position Summary...As the Director of Engineering and Platforms for Kubernetes at Walmart Global Tech, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our container and runtime platform capabilities. Leading a talented and diverse team of platform, and infrastructure engineers distributed across the globe, you will spearhead the development and operation of a cutting-edge Kubernetes platform that powers thousands of mission-critical applications and fuels Walmart's business growth and customer-centric initiatives.

About Team:

The Containers and Runtime Platforms team within Global Tech Platforms is dedicated to building and operating Walmart's enterprise Kubernetes platform — the foundation on which tens of thousands of services run across multiple clouds and regions. We solve scale, reliability, security, and efficiency problems that few organizations in the world encounter, enabling thousands of Walmart engineers to ship software safely and quickly.

Our platform operates with the agility of a nimble startup while carrying enterprise-grade accountability. It underpins workloads spanning e-commerce, supply chain, stores, data, and AI/ML — including GPU-accelerated training and inference — and is continuously evolving toward greater automation, self-service, and AI-driven operations.

What you'll do:

• Drive the Kubernetes platform operations charter, bring best practices, and solve key enterprise problems across multiple markets and business units.

• Own the strategy, roadmap, and end-to-end delivery of the enterprise Kubernetes platform, leading multiple teams and managers across geographies.

• Be accountable for platform reliability, availability, and operational excellence — driving SLO-based operations, incident reduction, blast-radius containment, and resilience across multi-region and hybrid/multi-cloud environments.

• Manage the development and support of container platform services that cater to both long-running online workloads and batch/scheduled processing, including AI/ML and GPU-accelerated workloads.

• Establish platform best practices and drive the use of state-of-the-art techniques in cluster architecture, multi-tenancy, scheduling, networking, service mesh, and upgrade/lifecycle automation.

• Develop and leverage a consistent framework to identify and prioritize platform use cases and investments based on business value and developer impact.

• Coordinate across functional teams of application engineers, SREs, product managers, security, and infrastructure partners on adoption and value-realization initiatives.

• Demonstrate an incremental solution approach with the agility and flexibility to overcome practical problems at scale.

• Drive capacity, utilization, and cost efficiency for the container fleet, improving scheduling, bin-packing, and resource governance.

• Build and lead a high-performing team of platform engineering, hiring, coaching, and growing both managers and senior individual contributors.

• Drive continuous improvement by researching industry and open-source best practices and incorporating them into our platform.

• Drive the execution of multiple business plans for your own project team and deliverables.

• Develop and leverage internal and external partnerships and networks to maximize the achievement of business goals, engaging key stakeholders in the development, execution, and evaluation of appropriate business plans and initiatives, and supporting associate efforts in these areas.

• Implement security, compliance, and policy-as-code frameworks, and ensure adherence to enterprise governance, audit, and regulatory requirements.

• Engage with leadership globally in setting up priorities for the team.

• Create a collaborative environment across geographies for delivering best-in-class services to customers around the globe.

What you'll bring:

• Bachelor of Engineering degree or closely related discipline.

• 15+ years of experience in building and operating large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems, or platform solutions.

• Strong experience in driving platform/engineering operations for mission-critical end-user applications.

• Deep understanding of Kubernetes and the cloud-native ecosystem — cluster architecture, control plane and etcd operations, scheduling, autoscaling, networking (CNI, ingress, service mesh), storage (CSI), and observability.

• Experience leading large/medium distributed platform teams, including leading managers across multiple geographies.

• Experience operating across public and private cloud (Azure, GCP, and on-premises/OpenStack) with multi-region and disaster-recovery design.

• Experience building self-service developer platforms and CI/CD ecosystems, with a strong focus on developer productivity and platform adoption.

• Strong operational rigor — demonstrated ownership of availability, performance, security, and cost for large-scale production systems, including SLOs, incident and problem management, and continuous improvement.

• Excellent influence and communication skills, with a track record of partnering with senior stakeholders and driving a culture of innovation, automation, and engineering excellence.
