The Position
The Director - US Tax, Trade, IP works on complex issues that will require an in-depth knowledge of the company and its long-term ambitions. Develops Novo Nordisk Inc (NNI's) policy positions, in line with Enterprise Strategy for tax, trade and intellectual property. Manages relationships with select government agencies. Serves as a subject matter expert. Solicits internal stakeholder insights to advance company priorities and analyze the business impact of select policy proposals in areas such as tax policy, trade, patents and intellectual property - to NNI and the broader industry. Educates and enables broader PA Team and NNI business to leverage these positions. Works in a matrixed environment and coordinate with peers and cross-functional colleagues locally and globally.
Relationships
Reports to the Market Access and Public Affairs Senior Director, Policy. Other internal relationships include a dotted line with Corporate Tax, as well as other Market Access & Public Affairs teams, Medical, Legal, Compliance, Communications and other key stakeholders locally and globally.
External relationships include select federal agencies that may develop health care policies that could impact the pharmaceutical industry. Interactions frequently involve interactions with senior level leaders regarding matters of significance to NNI.
Essential Functions

  • Achieve deep understanding of, and serve as a subject matter expert on, assigned policy areas and the potential impact to NNI's business
  • Integral part of NNI Public Affairs, with close collaboration with Corporate Tax and Legal to ensure proper business and policy strategies related to tax, trade, and intellectual property
  • Monitor and analyze global, US federal, state, and local tax legislation, regulations, judicial developments, and proposals to assess their potential impact on the organization
  • Recognize tax, trade, and IP policy risks and implement mitigation strategies across Novo Nordisk. Communicate across NAO and Corporate Tax to ensure that risks are properly quantified, reported and documented
  • Understand and evaluate potential business impact of policy proposals by coordinating and gathering insights from other departments (Corporate Tax, MA, Comm'l BUs, Medical, Regulatory, Legal, etc)
  • Assigned policy areas may include, but are not limited to: Tax, Trade, Intellectual Property, Supply Chain, Private Health Insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, Reference Pricing, Pricing / Price Increases, Reimbursement, Privacy, Labor / Employment
  • Develop NNI's policy positions, in line with Enterprise Strategy
  • Clearly communicate with federal agencies on NNI's positions
  • Educate and enable broader Market Access and Public Affairs Teams, Corporate Tax team, and other NNI colleagues, on policy positions
  • Build and maintain strategic networks of relationships internally (locally and globally)
  • Coordinate and communicate proactively with internal stakeholders to effectively collaborate and inform
  • Lead internal collaborative teams on specific policy initiatives identified by NNI Executive Team


Physical Requirements
10-20% overnight travel required.
Qualifications

  • J.D. or advanced degree required
  • 8+ years of policy development, advocacy, legal, government affairs or other relevant experience required
  • Expert knowledge of issues within the US healthcare system pertaining to tax policy, trade, patents and intellectual property that affect the pharmaceutical industry
  • Pharmaceutical/healthcare industry and legal experience preferred
  • Strong executive presence and communication/presentation skills that engage senior leaders among internal and external audiences
  • Ability to convey passion and generate excitement and enthusiasm about Novo Nordisk
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Superior analytical, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated career progression with increasing roles of responsibility
  • Proven track record of effective strategic planning, execution and follow up
  • Previous experience working in a matrixed organizational structure, with strong commitment to collaboration across team, department, and industry "boundaries"


The base compensation range for this position is $200,000 to $259,000. Base compensation is determined based on a number of factors. This position is also eligible for a company bonus based on individual and company performance.
Novo Nordisk offers long-term incentive compensation and or company vehicles depending on the position's level or other company factors.
