About the Team and the role

Deutsche Bank Technology in Berlin is part of a global network of technology specialists supporting the Bank’s trading businesses. The Berlin technology teams work with business units using agile ways of working to develop solutions for financial services and electronic trading.

Within Core Trading Technology, the focus is on electronic trading solutions for Fixed Income and Currencies. The technology environment includes high-performance, low-latency platforms that connect market venues, trading capabilities and internal analytics and support business-critical trading operations across global markets.

As Director (d/m/w) Principal Architect, you will shape the architecture and technical direction of high-performance backend systems in a latency-sensitive electronic trading environment. Combining architectural leadership with hands-on engineering expertise, you will guide globally distributed teams on system design, Core Java, resilience and performance, while helping turn complex trading requirements into reliable front-to-back solutions. The role provides broad technical influence across architecture, scalability and technology decisions, working closely with trading, engineering, QA and DevOps stakeholders.

Your key responsibilities

• Shape the architecture and technical direction of end-to-end electronic trading platforms, translating trading and business requirements into reliable, low-latency solutions.
• Maintain a hands-on engineering role through design reviews, prototyping, coding and performance investigations.
• Provide technical guidance on system design, Core Java, concurrency, resilience and performance across globally distributed engineering teams.
• Identify and address architectural, scalability, performance and operational risks in complex backend systems.
• Evaluate relevant technologies and AI-assisted engineering practices for their application within the engineering environment.
• Collaborate closely with business, architecture, QA and DevOps stakeholders to support effective technical decisions and front-to-back delivery.

Your skills and experiences

• Strong hands-on Core Java engineering expertise and proven ability to build production-grade backend systems.
• Demonstrated experience delivering complex, distributed systems from architecture and design through to production.
• Deep expertise in low-latency, high-throughput and fault-tolerant architectures, including concurrency, JVM performance, networking and profiling.
• Sound architectural judgement combined with practical problem-solving skills for complex technical challenges.
• Ability to influence technical direction and engineering decisions effectively across teams without relying on direct people-management responsibility.
• Excellent communication skills and fluency in English for effective collaboration within globally distributed teams.
• Proven ability to use AI tools effectively to increase productivity, optimize processes and solve business problems, applying sound judgement and ensuring responsible handling of data and AI-generated results.
