Job Summary 

The People Team strives to make GHC the best home for leaders seeking careers in health equity. The Director of People and Culture is a strategic, mission-driven leader who oversees equitable, inclusive, and people-centric HR services for our team. In doing so, the Director of People and Culture helps empower, support, and retain leaders who maximize GHC’s impact. The primary responsibilities for this role include day-to-day People operation and overseeing talent acquisition, performance management, learning and development, compensation and benefits strategy, benefits and payroll HR administration, staff engagement, employee relations, legal compliance, HRIS administration, and People analytics. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the People and Culture Director will be a People Team of one.

People Strategy & Organizational Culture

  • Alongside CEO & COO, set the People Team’s vision and strategy, helping GHC become the best home for leaders seeking careers in health equity
  • Steward staff satisfaction through excellent customer service, innovative staff services, and staff engagement opportunities
  • Champion and center Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) across the organization and embed DEIB across all facets of People work.
  • Ensure an equitable and inclusive employee experience through equitable career opportunities and robust and accessible reporting structures
  • Build a thriving GHC culture rooted in trust, respect, and inclusivity across all locations, backgrounds, and identities
  • Lead workforce planning, ensuring GHC has the right people, skills, and resources to achieve its goals

People Operations

  • Lead payroll administration – ADP in this US and working with a payroll provider for GHC’s African countries of operation.
  • Manage health insurance administration and renewals
  • Manage all other GHC benefits (time-off, pensions, 401k, professional development funds, FSAs, commuter benefits, etc.)
  • Serve as the first point of contact for People admin services and support
  • Be the owner and technical expert of our HR information system (BambooHR), our applicant tracking system (Lever), and our performance management system (Lattice) 

Talent Acquisition, Management, and Transitions

  • Oversee outreach, recruitment, and hiring, with a particular emphasis on strengthening GHC’s commitment to diversity
  • Execute and strengthen GHC learning and growth program (annual reviews, 360 feedback, etc.), unlocking excellent staff performance aligned with strategic organizational goals
  • Set and steward performance expectations to ensure staff understand the competencies they need to succeed at GHC 
  • Support managers strengthen staff performance (e.g. setting clear expectations, recognizing good work, documenting and addressing performance issues, etc.)
  • Oversee all career milestones from onboarding, and promotions, to offboarding

Learning & Development

  • Set GHC’s learning and development strategy, anchored around GHC’s competency model and learning and growth strategy
  • Advise managers in their efforts to build thriving teams and develop their direct reports 
  • Champion leadership development by identifying and promoting professional development opportunities (e.g. through coaching, stretch assignments, training, and workshops)

Total Rewards

  • Oversee GHC’s total reward strategy and uphold GHC’s compensation philosophy, ensuring compensation at GHC is equitable, competitive, rewarding, and transparent 
  • Conduct routine compensation and benefits reviews to ensure market competitiveness and internal equity upholding job classification structures and salary scales

Strategic Data Insights

  • Create and update People Data Dashboards across the full spectrum of HR data and use (i.e. demographics, attrition, time to hire, etc)
  • Share and use data to People team decisions and to help other leaders make strategic, data-driven business decisions 

Risk & Compliance

  • Support and lead performance and disciplinary proceedings
  • Mitigate risks via excellent legal, tax, and statutory compliance, cost-conscious decision-making, proactive risk reviews, and audits
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal employment-related laws and regulations

Location

Lilongwe, Malawi; Kigali, Rwanda; Kampala, Uganda; Lusaka, Zambia; Nairobi, Kenya; or US remote (Eastern Standard Time zone preferred). GHC is fully remote in Kenya, Uganda, and the US and has hybrid work arrangements in Malawi, Rwanda, and Zambia. GHC does not sponsor work permits. Applicants must be authorized to work in one of the countries mentioned above.
