- Hire and develop outstanding engineers to design and build our HTS magnets
- Plan, organize and manage the work of the team accordingly
- Create metrics, and delivery goals for the team
- Establish best practices, workflows and standards for the unique domain of HTS magnet design (extreme loads, vacuum and cryo operation, EM considerations)
- Set clear design standards and ensure they are aligned with project needs
- Ensure that released drawings and engineering products are correct and of high quality
- Drive team to meet needed deadlines
- Establish and manage budgets for team overhead and contract support
- Provide guidance and direction to the team to ensure operational and technical excellence
- Work with the other engineering team leaders to resolve technical issues
What we’re looking for:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar engineering discipline)
- 15+ years of experience in the engineering of magnets or similarly complex hardware systems
- Experience with developing and designing hardware systems through the use of 3D modeling and simulation software
- 5+ years of supervisory experience with at least 10 individuals
- Experience designing for environments with extreme thermal variations
- Ability to develop and manage design procedures
- Familiarity with codes including ASME standards
- Experience with CAD design tools such as: NX, Creo, SolidWorks, etc.
- Ability to clearly express and critique ideas
- Attention to detail
- Emphasis on elegance and simplicity over complexity
- Drive towards commercially viable solutions
- Values that align with our company’s values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique
Bonus points for:
- Experience with REBCO and high-temperature superconducting tape
- Experience designing high-field magnets
- Experience designing for and operating in ultra-high vacuum environments
- Experience designing and operating cryogenic fluid systems
Must-have Requirements:
- Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
- Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics

What We Do
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS is collaborating with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with new groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. CFS is now building SPARC, the world's first commercially relevant, net energy fusion demonstration device. SPARC will pave the way for the first fusion power plant, ARC, that will produce power on the grid.
The ultimate mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change.
