POSITION CONCEPT:

Boston Center for the Arts seeks to add a forward-thinking and strategic Director of Institutional Giving to our expanding Development Team. Supported by the Development Coordinator and in collaboration with the Senior Director of Development, the Director of Institutional Giving will strategize relationships with foundation, government, and corporate funders, and successfully secure funding as the organization continues to build its combined base of contributed support toward a goal of $1.7m for the current fiscal year. 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Secure ~$1 million in funding from institutional sources each fiscal year. 
  • In collaboration with other Development staff and the CEO, manage all aspects of foundation, government, and corporate donor relations, including, but not limited to: coordinating introductory and update meetings with program officers, soliciting funds, cultivating new funders, effectively stewarding relationships with current funders, and maintaining accounting and record-keeping for grant reports.
  • Research and submit successful applications for foundation, government, and corporate grants to support BCA programs, operations, and organizational initiatives.
  • In collaboration with BCA Finance, maintain and successfully manage an institutional giving timeline to ensure timely submission of proposals, progress reports, and final reports.
  • Maintain regular and courteous contact with all funders, including letters, emails, phone calls, invitations, and personal visits.
  • Participate in budget planning, goal setting, and strategic planning to assist with the creation of the Development Team’s annual operating plans.
  • Work in collaboration with Marketing & Communications and Artistic Programming staff to develop, manage, and implement all fundraising event sponsorship opportunities and in-kind donations for organizational events and artistic program initiatives.
  • Together with Marketing & Communications, establish and manage institutional marketing agreements for sponsor recognition. 
  • Establish, organize, and implement solicitation and cultivation strategies to fully leverage networks established by members of the BCA staff, Board of Directors, community partners, and new business relationships.
  • Attend meetings of the Board of Directors and Board committees as requested.
  • Attend all required staff and departmental meetings, and work collaboratively with all BCA staff.
  • Provide professional development resources and mentorship for BCA resident artists when requested.
  • Support all BCA programs and special events as requested. Some attendance at evening and weekend performances and events will be required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in higher arts administration or related field preferred
  • Minimum of 4 to 7 years of experience in institutional fundraising and foundation relations, with significant grant writing and grant submission experience
  • Must demonstrate a successful track record of five- and six-figure awards from foundations, government, and corporate sources
  • Excellent and compelling written communication skills
  • An outgoing and friendly demeanor
  • An understanding of the mission and goals at BCA, including a demonstrated commitment to cultural and racial equity
  • Strong institutional fundraising track record
  • Experience working in cooperation with colleagues across departments 
  • Knowledge of and appreciation for the visual and performing arts
  • Exceptional organization and time management skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects with great attention to detail
  • Experience working within the Microsoft Office Suite, G-Suite, Grants and Foundations portals, and CRM software.

All staff are required to work in-person, and on-site at the BCA campus; there is no option for fully remote work. However, staff are provided with a bank of remote work days to use annually.

JOB STRUCTURE AND BENEFITS:

This is an exempt full-time position. The salary range is $75,000 - $85,000. Boston Center for the Arts offers a comprehensive benefits package including generous paid time off (PTO), 80% coverage for medical and dental insurance, an FSA plan, short-term disability, and a 403(b) retirement savings plan plus complimentary tickets to BCA and BCA partner events and performances.

Mission
Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) is a not-for-profit performing and visual arts complex that supports working artists to create, perform and exhibit new works, develops new audiences, and connects the arts to community.

The Complex
The BCA’s 190,000 square foot campus consists of:

• Four theatres. These include the BCA Plaza Theatre with 142 seats; the BCA Plaza Black Box with up to 90 seats, as well as the new, state-of-the-art Stanford Calderwood Pavilion, which houses the Roberts Studio Theatre with up to 209 seats and the Wimberly Theatre with up to 370 seats.
• Rehearsal and education space. Rehearsal Hall A and Deane Rehearsal Hall in the Calderwood Pavilion are the main rehearsal spaces for larger companies and are also used for performances, events, and meetings.
• The Mills Gallery. The premier, independent non-profit gallery in Boston, showing the work of local and national, established and emerging artists
• The Tremont Estates Building. The Artists Studio Building is the working home for over 50 artists.
• The Cyclorama. Opened in 1865, the Cyclorama is on the National Register of Historic Places. Featuring a copper skylight dome atop a round brick-lined 23,000 square foot space, the Cyclorama can host up to 1,200 visitors.
• The Boston Ballet Building. This Graham Gund-designed building has been home to the Boston Ballet for 16 years.
• The Community Music Center of Boston (CMCB). Now in its 99th year, CMCB has positively impacted the lives of thousands of children and adults each year, many of them underserved, through lessons and classes on site, in the Boston Public Schools, through social service agencies and at community centers.
• Beehive Jazz Café, is nestled in the BCA complex in space that was once occupied by a black-box theatre at street level and a basement. Now, a dining room on the upper level overlooks the lower level café and stage where live jazz is featured nightly.
