Summary Generated by Built In

Lime is the largest global shared micromobility business, operating in close to 30 countries across five continents. We’re on a mission to build a future where transportation is shared, affordable and carbon-free. Our electric bikes and scooters have powered more than one billion rides in cities around the world. Named a 2025 Time 100 Most Influential Company, Lime continues to set the pace for shared micromobility globally, spurring a new generation of clean alternatives to car ownership.

At Lime, we design and develop our vehicles in house to build the best possible ride for our customers. Our vehicles are a public reminder of our presence, and the foundation upon which the Lime experience is built. Building our own hardware is a strategic advantage that allows us to innovate and respond quickly to this fast-changing segment.

As a Director of Hardware Engineering, you play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our products. Your mission? To manage a dynamic team of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, NPI engineers, and reliability engineers. You will drive the successful development of Lime vehicles and new technologies.

This is a remote role with regular visits to our engineering offices in Kunshan and Shenzhen, and occasional travel to Lime’s global offices and Lime’s supplier sites.

What You’ll Do:

  • Manage a China based team of hardware engineers - including Mechanical, Electrical, New Product Introduction, and Reliability Engineering. You will collaborate closely with Lime’s Software Engineering teams in China, US based Engineering teams (hardware and software), Product and Program Managers, Design, Ops, and Supply Chain teams.

  • Provide subject matter expertise and thought partnership to shape and influence future roadmaps, product architectures, technology investments, partnerships, and product plans.

  • Provide technical oversight and management of ODM and JDM supplier relationships and projects.

  • Own the hardware development process from concept to launch. New Lime products come to life under your watchful eye. You ensure they’re not just good, but exceptional, with high-quality features that delight our customers.

  • Work across multiple technologies, facilitating deep technical discussions on product architecture and product design/development tradeoffs. You will align workstreams and expectations across hardware (e.g wheels, brakes, batteries), power (e.g. charging, motors), electronics (e.g. GPS, bluetooth, cameras), and firmware (e.g. lock/unlock algorithms).

  • Drive efficiency and effectiveness throughout our process, constantly seeking opportunities to enhance our methodologies and mechanisms to deliver exceptional products to our consumers

  • Stay abreast of new technologies relevant to our industry and implement them when feasible. Continue to self-educate with new technologies.

  • Bring best in class tools and processes to Lime’s development processes including mCAD, structural simulation, mold flow simulation, 3D tolerance evaluation, DFM, eCAD, schematic capture, circuit simulation, SIPI, PCB layout, PCB fab, SMT, ICT, conducted and OTA RF testing, system validation, and qualification.

  • Support a talented hardware engineering team, providing coaching to enable increased team impact. Grow talent within the team and help team members achieve their career goals.

About You:

  • 12+ years experience in Hardware Development with experience directing development programs, creating technology strategy, and developing great Engineering Managers.

  • You are an empathetic manager with a proven track record of hiring and developing a talented team. You are an expert coach and mentor who routinely increases the impact created by those on your team

  • You have a track record of transforming teams and organizations, adapting to difficult situations, and bringing positive organizational evolution.

  • You are passionate about Lime's mission and the value micro mobility will bring to the world’s cities.

  • You are a self-starter and get things across the finish line. You identify the most important problems and solve them.

  • You are a strategic thinker who helps teams see the big picture while staying focused and productive. You are also detail oriented and able to organize large amounts of information into informative, insightful updates for all levels of management.

  • You are able to drive decision making with our C-suite at one moment, and then dive deep with technical teams to solve problems the next moment..

  • You have a deep understanding of the process by which systems are optimized for cost, performance, and hardware/firmware development efficiency.

  • You have experience developing connected products (bluetooth, wifi, GPS, LTE, UWB, NFC)

  • You are a skilled collaborator who aligns diverse goals and enables data driven decisions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years managing Engineering Managers.

  • Experience developing consumer facing technology products.

  • Experience working with engineering teams in the US, Europe, and China.

  • Some experience with Lime or another shared micro mobility provider, either in your home town or while traveling.
