The FP&A team at Upstart plays an integral part in the company’s business and financial planning process. We are looking for a highly motivated and hard-working leader to join our team to help manage and grow our business, as well as support other operational and strategic decision-making across the organization.
As the Director of FP&A, you will drive and support all aspects of FP&A which includes in-depth short and long term financial and business planning, collaborating with business leaders across the company, and driving analyses for business and strategic cases. Through your efforts, we’ll be able to ensure the Upstart leadership team stays on top of our financial performance and risks. Own the P&L for our core Personal Loan product, driving both short term and long term forecast and ensuring financial accountability and transparency
Provide leadership oversight to the FP&A team that supports Personal Loan and key horizontal functions across Growth, Lending Partnerships, and Operations Onboarding, offering strategic and data driven insights as well as forward-looking recommendations to executive leadership on a regular basis
Develop financial analyses for new initiatives (such as pricing decisions and operational investments) and use financial modeling to demonstrate impact of aligning short and long term priorities with overall business goals; provide appropriate oversight in ensuring priorities are met and business decisions drive positive ROI for the company
Partner and collaborate with various leaders across product, machine learning, growth, and capital funding to provide business insights and develop both tactical and strategic solutions to issues and risks for those areas
Collaborate with internal teams to help build upon and enhance reporting infrastructure and tools for financial analyses, leveraging BI tools such as Looker or Mode
Drive operational excellence in all aspects of forecast and planning, including but not limited to, business metric performance tracking, revenue and expense budget management, monthly close analysis, and forecast and reporting deliverables
Support key corporate financial deliverables, including but not limited to, earnings preparation, guidance setting, business reviews, and other ad-hoc analyses
Coach and manage a team of three (two Finance Managers and one Sr. Financial Analyst), fostering growth, accountability, and high performance.
Minimum Requirements:
- BS/MS Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Statistics or equivalent practical experience
- 13-15 years of relevant work experience (eg. FP&A, Corporate Finance, Strategic Finance, Business Operations/Analytics) with increasing responsibility
- Experience with 3-statement financial modeling and forecasting and building models from scratch
- Demonstrated FP&A breadth with progressive responsibility, owning P&Ls & budgets, leading forecasting cycles, partnering with execs, and managing teams that handle complex financial models.
- Highly competent in Excel and/or Google Sheets: excellent financial modeling skills and ability to perform complex analyses with big data sets required
- Proven track record in demonstrating well-developed strategic, analytical, interpersonal, organizational and communications skills
- Strong communication and executive presentation skills
- 5–7 years of managing and building teams, often including leading managers (not just individual contributors)
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with NetSuite or equivalent accounting system
- Experience with financial planning software such as Adaptive, Anaplan, or Hyperion
- Experience with BI tools such as Looker, Tableau or Mode
- Experience with advanced data analytics tools such as SQL, Python or R
- Previous consumer marketplace lending industry experience
- MBA preferred

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
