Position Summary: The Director of External Communications will lead the strategy and execution of the Company's external communication efforts. This role is responsible for managing and enhancing the Company’s public image, overseeing media relations, and ensuring consistent messaging across all external channels. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of managing high-impact communication programs and, preferably, a strong background in communications within the healthcare or medical device industry.

This role will work collaboratively with internal, cross-functional teams including Corporate Communications, Marketing, Legal and others, along with external partners to develop communication materials and execute on project plans.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning and Execution:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive external communication strategies that align with the Company’s business objectives.

  • Create and manage a proactive media relations program to enhance the Company’s reputation and visibility.

  • Oversee the development and distribution of press releases, media advisories, and other public statements.

  • Monitor industry trends and media coverage to identify opportunities for proactive communication.

Media Relations:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key media contacts in the healthcare and medical device industries.

  • Manage media inquiries and interviews.

  • Prepare executives for media interactions, including briefings, and talking points.

Content Development:

  • Oversee the creation of high-quality content for external audiences, including press releases, white papers, and social media updates.

  • Ensure consistent and accurate messaging across all external communication platforms.

Issues Management & Crisis Communication:

  • Maintain and implement crisis communication plans to manage and mitigate potential reputational risks.

  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external partners during crisis situations.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Collaborate with internal teams, including Marketing, Investor Relations, ESG Task Force, Legal and others, to ensure alignment and consistency in messaging.

  • Engage with industry associations, patient advocacy groups, and other external stakeholders to build and maintain positive relationships.

  • Support community outreach and engagement initiatives.

Metrics and Reporting:

  • Establish KPIs and metrics to measure the effectiveness of external communication efforts.

  • Provide regular reports and updates to senior leadership on media coverage, public sentiment, and other relevant metrics.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in communications, with Corporate and/or agency experience.

  • Proven experience in the healthcare or medical device industry is required.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong media relations skills. Adept at creating and maintaining relationships with media on a local, trade, national and global level.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic communication plans.

  • Experience managing crisis communications.

  • Experience with Corporate social media profile management and internal communications.

  • Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and senior leadership.

  • Experience with AP Style.

  • Familiarity with media monitoring tools like Meltwater.

  • Familiarity with project management tools like Monday.com.

  • Experience with MS Office Suite.

Pay Transparency:

  • A reasonable estimate of the annual base salary for this position is $124,250 - $206,750 + discretionary annual bonus. Pay ranges may vary by location.
