The Role

About Scope3

Scope3 is the industry’s leading collaborative sustainability platform. By modeling the complex digital advertising supply chain, we help brands measure and dramatically reduce digital waste to reduce carbon emissions from advertising and increase the efficacy of advertising investment. This is an exceptional opportunity to build a company alongside great people and make a difference in one of the most important issues facing the planet: the climate crisis.

We’re a venture backed company of 100+ folks distributed across the globe. We are fortunate to be led by an experienced leadership team, many of whom designed and engineered the digital advertising landscape as we know it today. The company secured $20M in Series B funding led by GV in Oct 2023 (additional investors include Venrock, Rucker Park, Room40 Ventures, and Craft Ventures), and we are thrilled to be the recipient of an additional round of $25M in Oct 2024. Scope3 has significant market traction with more than 150+ customers and is experiencing accelerated growth.

Scope3 is a fully remote company and largely asynchronous to provide flexible working hours and to operate globally, with concentrations in New York and Europe. At this time, we are hiring in Canada, Australia, UK, France, Germany, and the United States.

About the Role

We're seeking a Director of Engineering who codes—not someone who used to code, but someone who still ships production code regularly and sees it as essential to effective leadership.

You'll lead our User & Agentic Interfaces organization, responsible for how customers and AI agents interact with the Scope3 platform. This spans traditional web interfaces, AI-powered experiences, and agent-to-agent communication protocols. You'll build and scale multiple teams delivering world-class experiences across human and agentic touchpoints—from customer-facing applications to MCP servers and protocol implementations as we scale our Scope3 agentic platform.

The advertising industry is transforming through AI and agentic technologies faster than anyone can plan for. This role requires deep technical judgment that only comes from staying close to the code and being on the cutting edge of new technologies. When your team proposes a novel approach to agent communication protocols, you need to evaluate it from experience, not abstraction. When they hit a complex problem, you need to open the PR and understand exactly what's happening.

You'll split your time between coding and leadership. Roughly 30-40% writing code—shipping features, fixing bugs, reviewing architecture, prototyping new patterns. The rest on leadership: developing your managers, hiring, cross-functional planning, unblocking teams, and strategic technical decisions.

Responsibilities:

  • Build, lead, and mentor a growing organization of engineering managers and senior engineers across multiple teams
  • Write production code regularly to maintain technical context and credibility
  • Define technical vision for how humans and AI agents interact with our platform, grounded in implementation reality
  • Partner with Head of Product and Head of Engineering to align technical solutions with product strategy
  • Drive hiring strategy to attract top talent in frontend engineering, AI/agent systems, and protocol development
  • Manage resource allocation, capacity planning, and budgeting
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and healthy conflict
  • Collaborate with external protocol partners and standards bodies

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience with deep expertise in frontend systems and APIs.
  • 4+ years leading engineering teams, including managing managers, while maintaining hands-on technical contributions
  • You still code regularly and have no plans to stop—this is energizing to you, not a burden
  • Strong command of modern web technologies (JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Next.js) and full-stack development
  • Experience with AI/ML systems, agent frameworks, and agentic protocols (MCP, A2A)
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS, or Azure) and modern deployment practices
  • Track record building and scaling high-performing teams in high-growth environments
  • Exceptional at articulating complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
  • Comfort making hard decisions with incomplete information
  • You know when to be hands-on and when to delegate

Compensation:

The salary range for this role is $210-225k USD, 210-220k CAD.

The base salary offered to an applicant could be higher or lower based on each applicant's specific skill set, depth of experience, relevant education or training, etc

Benefits & Perks:
Details vary by location (USA/Canada), but all employees receive:

  • Health & wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with significant employer contribution; short- and long-term disability coverage; health savings/flexible spending options
  • Retirement: Employer-matched retirement savings plan (401(k) or RRSP)
  • Time off: Generous paid time off, statutory holidays, and year-end office closure
  • Parental leave: 13 weeks fully paid (eligibility requirements apply)
  • Remote work: Company-provided home office equipment, setup stipend, and access to WeWork spaces
  • Equity: Stock options for eligible roles

Our Culture & Values

  • Passion for the environment and climate work. We are a mission-driven company, and this is what motivates us to work hard and deliver outcomes for our customers.
  • Clear and empathetic communication, especially while working asynchronously. We have always been a global, remote-first company and we collaborate using Notion, Miro, Slack, Loom, and other tools.
  • We celebrate healthy conflict in the workplace; we focus on the solutions and we move on quickly.
  • The ability and accountability to deliver what we promise. We do what we say we will do, and we don’t make promises we can’t keep.
  • Experience driving systemic change. Our mission is to make advertising and AI more effective for the economy and the environment, and this requires a holistic approach to re-imagining and inspiring an industry movement at a global scale.
