Salary: $190,000 - $225,000 (commensurate with experience)

York is seeking an Electrical Engineering Director to provide strategic direction for the electrical engineering team, ensuring alignment with goals. This person will hold responsibility over FPGA development, PCBA development, Electrical Power Systems, RF Systems, Radiation Analysis and Parts Obsolescence Management, Operational excellence, and Mentorship and Development.
Responsibilities for Electrical Engineering Director
- Leadership & Strategy
- Lead the Electrical Engineering team, providing strategic direction and ensuring alignment with company goals.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with mechanical, software, flight dynamics, and systems engineering teams.
- Interface with the Engineering Development and Product team to define and drive the electrical design roadmap for the product.
- Electrical Power Systems (EPS)
- Oversee design and development of spaceborne electrical power systems, including power generation, storage, load distribution, circuit protection, and grounding architecture.
- Ensure efficient, robust, and reliable power solutions that meet mission requirements.
- Conduct trade studies and optimize power systems for mass, efficiency, and cost.
- RF Systems
- Direct the development and integration of RF and optical communication systems.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and mission specifications.
- Manage RF testing and debugging processes to ensure system performance.
- FPGA Development
- Oversee the architecture, development, implementation, and maintenance of FPGA designs for satellite systems.
- Ensure designs meet performance, power, interface, and reliability requirements.
- Drive validation and verification processes for FPGA systems.
- Establish and ensure adherence to internally developed design and documentation standards
- PCBA Development
- Oversee the design, development, and manufacturing of PCBAs for satellite subsystems.
- Ensure high-quality and scalable manufacturing processes and guide engagement with Contract Manufacturing Companies.
- Establish and ensure adherence to internally developed design and documentation standards.
- Drive continuous improvement and design for manufacturability principles in PCBA design.
- Develop and maintain approaches to streamline PCBA testing while maintaining quality to include establishing best practices for standard repairs.
- Radiation Analysis and Parts Obsolescence Management
- Ensure radiation analysis for all electrical systems, addressing space environment challenges such as total ionizing dose (TID), single-event effects (SEE), and other radiation-induced effects.
- Develop and implement strategies to mitigate radiation effects, including component shielding, redundancy, and design resilience.
- Manage parts obsolescence, ensuring availability of critical components and proactively identifying and qualifying replacements.
- Operational Excellence
- Drive innovation and best practices across electrical engineering disciplines.
- Establish KPIs to measure team performance and ensure timely project delivery.
- Manage budgets, resources, and vendor relationships effectively.
- Mentorship & Development
- Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous learning.
- Mentor and grow team members, ensuring professional development and technical excellence.
- Lead recruitment efforts to attract top talent.
Qualifications for Electrical Engineering Director
- Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience in electrical engineering, with at least 5 years in leadership roles.
- Extensive experience in satellite or aerospace industries is required.
- Technical Expertise
- Expertise in Electrical Power Systems, including batteries, solar panels, and power electronics.
- Strong knowledge of RF systems, including antenna design, modulation, and demodulation techniques.
- Strong knowledge of FPGA architecture and development, including VHDL/Verilog.
- Deep understanding of PCBA design, manufacturing, and testing.
- Experience in radiation analysis, including modeling and mitigation techniques for space environments.
- Knowledge and management of parts obsolescence processes, including risk analysis and alternative sourcing.
- Skills & Abilities
- Proficiency in electrical design tools (e.g., Altium, Xilinx Vivado, Ansys).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on innovation.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams.
- Compliance & Standards
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards (e.g., MIL-STD, NASA specs, IPC standards, and FCC regulations).
- Experience in designing systems to meet radiation-hardening requirements.
- Soft Skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Demonstrated success in managing multiple projects with competing priorities.
- Strong strategic thinking and decision-making skills.
- Other Requirements
- U.S. Person with the ability to obtain relevant security clearances (if applicable).
- Willingness to travel occasionally for vendor and customer engagements.
