The Director, Development will be a key leader within our North American Vertical which encompasses both our Sports and Local teams. This role will guide a talented group of developers tasked with driving data integration, re-platforming websites, optimizing site architecture, and spearheading efficiency-focused initiatives. Their work will span across various sites within the GDC group including Bookies.com, Rotowire.com, BetCalifornia.com, OntarioBets.com, USAToday.com, and several other large properties. 

 

Responsibilities 

  • Manage a team of developers, with responsibility for both direct reports and skip-level oversight within North American divisions
  • Lead architecture design across multiple teams
  • Establish and maintain development standards and processes for scalable, high-quality development
  • Ensure consistency in architecture, frameworks, languages and tools across teams and projects
  • Provide technical leadership for every aspect of software development
  • Collaborate with other senior leaders to help meet company goals and targets  
  • Distribute developers efficiently across projects and teams to prevent any potential bottlenecks  
  • Monitor emerging technologies and trends to drive innovation and help the team problem solve
  • Evaluate projects early and often to identify and resolve any issues 
  • Arrange needed training and upskilling for the team, where applicable  
  • Aid in the recruitment and long-term retention of key talent
  • Foster a culture of curiosity and continuous improvement within the team 

Requirements 

Technical 

  • Has 5+ years of commercial development experience using PHP
  • Has significant experience in JavaScript (Vue), HTML, and CSS/SCSS
  • Experience building and maintaining websites, applications and API’s using Laravel
  • Experience with a variety of AWS products and implementation
  • Comfortable with GitHub and the gitflow model
  • Can use ORM’s to access data but also know how to drop down to SQL statements if needed 

Leadership 

  • Possess a strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive
  • Has a minimum 5+ years’ experience managing a team of developers
  • Experience of providing team leadership in a distributed team environment
  • Skilled in developing and executing effective strategies, with a strong understanding of best practices
  • Ability to identify and address any processes gaps, driving improvements for optimized outcomes
  • Has a process for identifying technical tasks that need attention and working with business to get these prioritized
  • Skilled at communicating technical concepts to a non-technical audience
  • Clear ability to work in teams, contribute to technical decisions and learn/suggest new technologies
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
