The Senior Credit Officer (Director) is responsible for the independent adjudication, approval, and ongoing oversight of credit exposure relating to Canadian hedge funds and trading product clients. The role serves as a senior 2nd line risk leader, ensuring transactions comply with the Bank's risk appetite, credit policies, and regulatory requirements while supporting business growth within Counterparty Credit Risk Function.
Provides independent, objective review and adjudication of credit applications and transactions for an assigned portfolio within credit limits or makes credit recommendations and escalates as required. Ensures the credit quality of the assigned portfolios are maintained within the Bank’s risk tolerance, policies & procedures, and meet financing guidelines. Supports credit adjudication operations and initiatives. Provides training and support to teams and channels where the
applications and transactions originate.
Strategic Leadership & Advisory
- Act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders on credit risk, portfolio management, and strategic initiatives.
- Influence business decisions through independent risk assessment and expert recommendations.
- Lead strategic projects, process improvements, and change management initiatives.
- Identify emerging market, industry, and regulatory trends that may impact the portfolio.
Credit Adjudication & Risk Management
- Independently review, assess, and approve complex credit transactions and exception requests.
- Evaluate counterparty, credit, market, and collateral risks within established risk appetite.
- Monitor portfolio quality and ensure compliance with lending policies, procedures, and financing guidelines.
- Recommend credit structures, terms, conditions, and collateral requirements to mitigate risk.
Hedge Fund & Trading Products Oversight
- Assess exposures related to hedge funds, prime brokerage, securities financing, and trading products.
- Maintain expertise in market dynamics affecting collateralized products and counterparty credit exposure.
- Keep current on economic and market developments relevant to the portfolio.
Stakeholder Management & Influence
- Partner with Front Office, Market Risk, Legal, Compliance, Operations, and senior executives.
- Act as a key contact for internal and external stakeholders, including regulators when required.
- Build alignment across stakeholders while balancing risk and business objectives.
- Communicate complex credit decisions and risk concepts in a clear, practical manner.
Portfolio Analytics & Reporting
- Analyze portfolio trends, concentrations, and emerging risks.
- Develop and enhance reporting, dashboards, and management information systems.
- Leverage data and analytics to support risk-based decision making.
- Integrate information from multiple sources to improve monitoring and reporting effectiveness.
Leadership, Coaching & Talent Development
- Provide credit coaching, training, and subject matter expertise to credit teams and business partners.
- Support development of risk awareness and transaction structuring expertise across the organization.
- Serve as a senior specialist and thought leader within the enterprise.
Qualifications:
- Typically 10+ years of Capital Markets, Counterparty Credit Risk, or Credit Adjudication experience.
- Deep knowledge of the hedge fund industry.
- Strong expertise and knowledge of prime brokerage and trading products.
- Extensive experience with counterparty credit risk and market risk.
- Proven credit adjudication and approval authority experience.
- Ability to influence senior stakeholders and provide strategic risk guidance.
- Expertise in market risk given collateral based products coverage
- Credit qualifications and associated credit knowledge and skills according to the established qualification standards.
- Expert knowledge of banking products & services.
- Expert knowledge of credit portfolio management policies & procedures, and financing guidelines.
- Expert knowledge of industry trends and regulations.

Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
