The Director of the Art Museum is responsible for overseeing the museum’s operations, exhibitions, educational programs, and community outreach efforts. This position plays a key role in advancing the museum’s mission to educate, inspire, and engage the public through the collection, preservation, and exhibition of artwork that reflects the rich cultural heritage of the African Diaspora and other underrepresented communities.


Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategic plans for the museum that align with the university’s mission and goals.
  • Oversee the museum’s collection, ensuring proper care, conservation, and documentation of artworks.
  • Curate and coordinate exhibitions, including planning, installation, and promotion, to engage diverse audiences.
  • Collaborate with faculty, students, and community partners to create educational programs that enhance the museum’s role as an academic and cultural resource.
  • Lead fundraising efforts, including grant writing, donor cultivation, and sponsorships to support the museum’s initiatives and exhibitions.
  • Manage the museum’s budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and compliance with university policies.
  • Supervise and mentor museum staff, including curators, educators, and administrative personnel, fostering a collaborative and creative environment.
  • Develop marketing and outreach strategies to increase visibility and attendance at the museum, including social media, public relations, and event programming.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of special events, including exhibition openings, artist talks, and community programs.
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for the museum, representing it in public forums, professional organizations, and media outlets.


Education

  • Master’s degree in Art History, Museum Studies, Arts Administration, or a related field.
  • At least five years of experience in museum management, curation, or a similar leadership role in the arts sector.
  • Strong understanding of art collection management, exhibition planning, and public programming.
  • Must be able to lift 10 pounds.
