Databases are the beating heart of every business in the world.

Cockroach Labs is the creator of CockroachDB, the most highly evolved cloud-native, distributed SQL database on the planet that scales fast, survives anything, and thrives anywhere. We created CockroachDB to unshackle teams from the constraints of their database. Join us on our mission to enable every developer to build world-changing applications!

About the role

The Product Design team at Cockroach Labs is responsible for creating a scalable consumer-grade UX that makes data easy for all users of CockroachDB. We're seeking a Senior Product Designer to help shape the future of our Growth team. The Growth team is on a mission to build product experiences and infrastructure to accelerate the growth of our Cloud products. The team focuses on two things: highlighting value and removing friction for our users who are application developers.  Our goals are to improve onboarding for our users, guide them to form long lasting good habits, in turn change the trajectory on the activation metrics, and get our product in the hands of thousands of app developers. Our approach is both customer-focused and data-driven. It’s a high-trusting, high-performing, no-ego team with extreme ownership on the outcomes.

As a typical Staff Product Designer, you’ll:

  • Manage design projects across the entire product lifecycle, from proposing initial concepts to shipping high-quality features
  • Contribute to and improve the standard of UX design, including research, testing, interaction design, and visual design
  • Use quantitative and qualitative insights to understand user behavior and make decisions
  • Partner with multi-disciplinary team that includes UX researchers, product managers, engineers, and tech writers
  • Help maintain and iterate on our design system and advocate for scalable design solutions with frontend engineers

As a Staff Product Designer, Growth, you’ll do the above AND:

  • Be extremely business context-aware
  • Deliver high throughput in an environment that is filled with ambiguity
  • Enjoy taking a hypothesis-driven approach and live in the world of iterative experimentation
  • Humanize data by bringing disparate data points together to form a user narrative
  • Create impact through metrics, conversion rates, drop-offs, activation, engagement, and more (Analytics software is as much a part of your toolkit as design software)
  • Know when to use data, but not let the data dictate all possible pathways
  • Be comfortable with failing, in fact, look forward to the learnings
  • Run experiments, collate results, and share the learnings with the rest of the org

The expectations

In your first 30 days, you’ll meet with your Product Design mentor, who will provide the tools, guidance, support, and feedback you need to thrive as you become more embedded into our culture. Additionally, you'll go through our Cockroach University training program and spend time getting familiar with the specific developer and industry problems our team is solving. You'll learn how to use the Cockroach Labs Design System and UX Research Hub. You'll review any in-flight projects and begin to tackle some smaller tasks in the Growth design backlog. You'll begin building relationships with the other product designers, engineers, product managers, and members of the broader organization that you'll be working with day-to-day. You and the Head of Product Design will have the first of many long-term career planning conversations to understand your goals and how Cockroach Labs can best help you achieve them.

After 60 days (if not sooner), you’ll be fully integrated into the Growth and Serverless team. You will own major design decisions for our interfaces, partnering closely with other product designers. You’ll ensure that our design values and iterative processes are clearly understood and built into every design decision made.

You have

  • 5+ years of experience designing enterprise and/or complex consumer applications
  • 1+ years of relevant design experience in a Growth environment
  • Proven track record of success in building engaging products and can showcase your work. (A balanced understanding of strategy, research, interaction and visual design is a must for the role)
  • Leadership in an iterative design process that includes accepting and acting on feedback and constructive criticism
  • Experience in ownership of projects and communicating timelines and executing independently. Experience working with common design tools (Figma)
  • Experience using an established internal Design System.
  • Excellent communication skills. Confidently express firmly held beliefs, but also be convinced with new evidence
  • An understanding of web capabilities, including HTML, CSS, and Javascript
  • Bonus: Experience designing for a database product
  • Bonus: Experience using Segment, Snowflake, and Looker for data capture

Our team

The Product Design team currently consists of five product designers with a wide range of backgrounds and skill sets including UX research, service Design, illustration and of course, baking 🍪 . We're looking to expand our team to keep up with the business’s recent acceleration. Some key individuals you'll work with after joining are:

Reporting to Jeremy Bloom - Head of Product Design

Jeremy Bloom heads up the Product Design team at Cockroach Labs. He is responsible for our design process, system, and strategy. Before Cockroach, Jeremy was a Principal Product Designer at Percolate, designing enterprise SaaS experiences for Marketers. Prior to Percolate, Jeremy led the design for American Express iOS, Apple Watch, and Android applications at Kettle. When he’s not at work, Jeremy is probably reading a book, getting in some exercise, or spending time with his wife, son, and 3-legged pup Carl.

Key Partner - Vivek Balasubramanian - Senior Director, Product Growth & Serverless

Vivek Balasubramanian heads Product Growth, and Serverless at Cockroach Labs. As one of the newer members of the Product team, he is accountable for growing our serverless product and scaling the self-serve side of CockroachDB. Prior to Cockroach Labs, he was VP, Product Growth at WaveHQ, a fintech platform and before that, headed Product Growth at Shopify. Outside of Cockroach, he spends his time with his wife, 9 month old son, and a year and half old goldendoodle puppy.

An Insider's view of Cockroach Labs

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

Work-life balance is truly woven into CRL culture. Scheduled “Roach & Relax” days, zero expectation of being available/on-call outside of working hours or during PTO, and great flexibility so we don't have to mold our whole lives around our jobs. This company recognizes we do our best work when in balance and actively supports us in achieving it!

Michelle

Senior Technical Content Marketer II

How do you collaborate with other teams in the company?

Cross-team collaboration is essential at Cockroach Labs. It is the most effective way to leverage shared expertise across different areas of the database to solve a common problem. At the Toronto office, which has folks from almost every core database team, we enjoy taking on large projects that rely on close collaboration!

Aditya

Member of Technical Staff

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

As an engineer, I've gone from being an active participant in projects that push the bounds of CockroachDB's performance, scalability, and adaptability, to becoming the person leading those projects myself. From my coworkers, I've gained more confidence and more domain knowledge in being able to tackle complex challenges in the database space.

Bilal

Member of Technical Staff

How do you empower your team to be more creative?

We empower our teams to be more creative with two core values: autonomy and a commitment to excellence. We surround teams with examples of excellence, high standards, and critical information to spark ideas and then empower them with the autonomy to act. But creativity needs space, so every Friday is a flex day where teams can explore these ideas.

Isaac

VP, Engineering

What is your vision for the company?

For us to be widely recognized as the #1 zero-ops distributed MultiRegion, MultiCloud DB solution for OLTP apps. We truly are the one stop shop for all transactional workflows - the most highly reliable, easily scalable, effortlessly survivable cloud DB. I would love for folks to try us & see for themselves how easy it is to get started with CRDB!
