The Design Technologist will perform design, development, and maintenance of new or existing products and components. The major focus of this role is technical delivery and the Design Technologist will work directly with different units, suppliers, customers, and/or other teams. This requires the ability to communicate technical information in a concise and accurate manner. Decisions may significantly impact product performance, durability, quality, reliability, and serviceability; negotiations with suppliers; leveraging new technologies; warranty; total cost of non-quality; costs; sales; and customer perception.
Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Managing multiple Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) projects utilizing excavators as the base machine
- Collaborating with the Hydraulic Excavator Design Center in Akashi, Japan
- Collaborating with excavator production facilities
- Coordinating the releasing of drawings for OEM projects
- Technical investigations to assist OEM's in adapting the excavators to the OEM applications
- Layout studies to add additional systems and components to the base excavators
Basic Qualifications:
- Requires a bachelor degree in an accredited Engineering program with a minimum of 5 years of job related experience in machine development and/or design OR
- In lieu of bachelors degree, a minimum of 10 years experience in machine development and/or design is required
- Must have excellent analytical skills and the ability to perform complex assignments
- Requires a self-starter with strong technical leadership skills.
- Must have ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the work group, as well employees in other units, customers, and suppliers.
Top candidates will also have:
- A minimum of 10 years of OEM machine design experience
- Experience with excavator machine or component validation or other Caterpillar machines/vehicles.
- Understanding of hydraulic and electrical systems.
- Experience using Creo 3D modeling software.
- Experience with print reading and geometric dimension and tolerance (GD&T) and drawing releasing.
