About the Role:

As the Japan Deployment Strategy Manager on the Deployment Strategy team, you will play a critical role in driving the expansion of our battery swapping network in Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. This role reports to the Director of Deployment Strategy, and requires a strategic thinker with hands-on experience in deployment and operations, as well as strong partnerships and stakeholder management skills. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying and developing battery swap station sites, securing deployment partnerships, navigating the permitting and licensing landscape, and ensuring the successful launch and scale of our network. This position offers the opportunity to shape the future of EV infrastructure in a rapidly growing market.


What You'll Do:

  • Site Development & Deployment:
    • Identify and evaluate potential station sites for battery swapping in Japan and the Asia-Pacific region
    • Lead negotiations with property owners, real estate developers and local authorities to secure prime locations
    • Oversee the design, construction and commissioning of battery swapping stations
  • Partnership Management:
    • Develop and manage strategic partnerships with OEMs, fleet operators and other key stakeholders
    • Support Ample engineering teams based in California in their collaboration with OEM partners to ensure compatibility and seamless integration of battery swapping technology
    • Cultivate relationships with fleet customers to drive adoption and usage of the battery swapping network
  • Permitting & Licensing:
    • Navigate the complex regulatory environment in Japan and the Asia-Pacific region to obtain necessary permits and licenses
    • Support Ample policy team liaising with government agencies, local municipalities and industry regulators to ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements
  • Network Launch & Scale:
    • Lead the planning and execution of the network launch, ensuring timely and successful deployment
    • Develop and implement strategies for scaling the network and reducing deployment costs


What You'll Bring:

  • Fluency in Japanese and English is required
  • Based in Tokyo, Japan, or willingness to relocate
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Operations, or a related field. Graduate degree preferred
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in deployment, operations, or a related field, preferably within the EV, renewable energy or technology sectors
  • Proven track record of successfully managing complex deployment projects and partnerships
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, with the ability to read and interpret technical drawings and plans
  • Familiarity with the Japanese regulatory regime and permitting processes
  • Excellent negotiation, communication and relationship management skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team
  • Authorized to work in Japan
