Job Summary

The job of the Deckhand is to safely and efficiently provide the general labor on the tug or supply vessel. He/she will perform maintenance, housekeeping and simple repairs to the vessel or equipment, secure and unsecure the vessel to docks and barges, assist with the loading or unloading of personnel, supplies and equipment as well as provide radio, engine, line and fire watch. He/she will assist with the safe and efficient handling of ropes used to secure the vessel to buoys, rigs and/or docks. The Deckhand works under the supervision of the Captain.

Essential Functions:

  • Performing the daily cooking, cleaning, and sanitation of the vessel from the wheelhouse to the galley as well as scrubbing the exterior of the vessel weekly.
  • Help ensure an adequate amount of supplies are on board by notifying the Captain when supplies and consumables are being depleted.
  • Maintaining the proper functioning, cleanliness, and upkeep of all equipment on the deck and appliances in the cabin.
  • Storing, securing, and tying down all cargo being transported when the loads have shifted or become otherwise unsecured during the transport.
  • Pulling, hooking, and tying ropes to and from offshore rigs and other vessels or structures so as to ensure a safe and relatively stable vessel from which to off load or back load people, supplies, equipment, and cargo.
  • Connecting/ disconnecting and manually pulling and securing various hoses, ropes, and cables to and from offshore rigs and other supply vessels
  • Loading and storing supplies and groceries onto the vessels.
  • Chipping, scraping, grinding, and painting the interior and exterior of the vessel using small grinders, paint brushes, ect. This may also involve the utilization of a step ladder to work outside of the vessel structure.
  • Washing, scrubbing, cleaning, and moping the deck of the vessel as well as replacing deck boards, wiping up spills, ect.
  • Ensure all passengers wear life jackets and assist them on and off the vessel in a safe manner.
  • Rotate with all crew members in maintaining proper deck, engine, and radio watches.
  • Experience in Tugboat, Oilfield, Heavy Equipment, Operations, and/or Shipyard is preferred.
