In this position within Advisory Board's technology organization, the IT Data Engineer, plans, designs, implements, and maintain all Data and DevOps infrastructure and workflows for the Advisory Board's data and analytics research technology projects (includes major projects, minor projects, and enhancements). This person will need to develop a deep understanding of the Advisory Board AWS infrastructure and develop strong relationships with key developers and analysts. The position will play a critical role in all data technology initiatives as we continue this amazing journey of modernizing and innovating our data and technology ecosystem in support of our new and exciting business transformation.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture
  • Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional/non-functional business requirements
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
  • Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL and AWS 'big data' technologies
  • Build analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights into customer acquisition, operational efficiency, and other key business performance metrics
  • Work with stakeholders including the Executive, Product, Data and Design teams to assist with data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs
  • Keep our data separated and secure across national boundaries through multiple data centers and AWS regions
  • Create data tools for analytics and data scientist team members that assist them in building and optimizing our product into an innovative industry leader
  • Work with data and analytics experts to strive for greater functionality in our data systems
  • Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases
  • Strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured datasets
  • Build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency, and workload management
  • Developing and enabling continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) capabilities for systems
  • Build and maintain a CI/CD pipeline using Cloud Formation Templates, Terraform, Docker, containerization, and scripting and object-oriented program languages to support the team's AWS deployed production systems

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in technical field OR equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years of relevant professional work experience
  • Solid experience working with Terraform or Ansible
  • Solid experience with container orchestration services including Docker, Kubernetes, or AWS ECS
  • Solid experience with Java, Python and SQL
  • Solid experience in automated delivery of code and infrastructure via the development of CI/CD pipelines
  • Working experience with Cloud Native Technologies (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Experience working on Hadoop, Spark, or any other Big Data Framework
  • Flexibility to work across a variety of software-related disciplines: solution design, agile development, unit testing, refactoring, and build/deployment automation
  • Experience with relational databases, including Postgres, SQL Server, Redshift
  • Experience with AWS cloud services: ECS, EC2, EBS, S3, Glacier, RDS, VPC, Route53, ELB, IAM, CloudFront, CloudFormation, CloudWatch, SQS, SES, Lambda
  • Experience in manipulating, processing, and extracting value from large, disconnected datasets
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment
  • Experience with object-oriented/object function scripting languages: Python, Scala, etc.
  • CI/CD pipeline using Cloud Formation Templates, Terraform, Docker, containerization, and scripting and object-oriented program languages to support the team's AWS deployed production systems
  • Experience building and optimizing 'big data' data pipelines, architectures, and data sets
  • Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience developing applications using Scala
  • Experience migrating on-premises to Cloud (AWS or Azure)
  • Experience in the healthcare domain, especially in Clinical Quality Measures
  • Experience leading small groups of software engineers in the delivery of high-quality, scalable solutions
  • Experience with large product integrations and performance enhancements
  • Experience analyzing large volumes of data
  • Working knowledge of message queuing, stream processing, and highly scalable 'big data' data stores

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado/Connecticut/Nevada residents is $97,300 to $176,900.
