Opportunity Overview:

At Cohere Health our Machine Learning Team is focused on using unstructured clinical documents to automate and augment the prior authorization process. We do this through a combination of traditional machine learning techniques, computer vision, natural language processing and understanding, and novel approaches. The team is responsible for an end-to-end applied research process, starting from business problem articulation, to designing a comprehensive scientific experimentation plan pursuant to drive business impact, to optimal solution design for the given problem constraints. Functionally, this team owns algorithmic development, model builds and tuning/optimization, product-focused model evaluation, and deployment.

What you will do:

  • Provide leadership, coaching and guidance to a team of 5-6 Machine Learning Engineers
  • Own end-to-end applied research and development process for a variety of machine learning and AI systems, including business problem definition, experimentation planning, solutioning and development, and deployment
  • Lead by example: oversee development of experimentation plans, technical specification documents, contribute to product requirement documents, and write or review modular code while guiding team members in best software engineering practices
  • Build reliable and scalable production machine learning systems on AWS in conjunction with data engineering
  • Establish goals, deliverables and timelines for machine learning projects that solve business problems and make quantifiable impact; break large, ambiguous projects into smaller, more tractable milestones
  • Coordinate and build strong partnerships with Data Science, Product Management, Data Engineering, Application Engineering, DevOps, and Clinical and Operations teams to deliver innovative, problem-centric, high-quality Machine Learning Models
  • Help grow the ML team by interviewing candidates on ML team and across wider data team
  • Be a key contributor to the strategies and goals of the Machine Learning Team

Your background & requirements:

  • Experience leading machine learning projects from inception to deployment
  • Experience coaching and mentoring machine learning engineers
  • 5+ years experience in applied ML in the industry with an advanced degree (MS/PhD preferred) in computer science, machine learning, mathematics or similar field; strong preference for PhD with computer vision focus
  • Clear understanding of algorithmic development, tactical model building, model tuning and monitoring, and developing business metric evaluation methods that optimize models for product use
  • Robust understanding of experimental design; can independently design sequential, comprehensive set of falsifiable hypotheses pursuant to business needs; design data collection systems for data labeling and ground truth collection; define business metric measurement and evaluation systems for testing harness; and accurately interpret the results and outcomes of applied development onto the business at large
  • Expert in Python, PySpark, PyTorch
  • Experienced in various regression and classification approaches
  • Hands on experience building NLP models, using a variety of techniques
  • Experience working with healthcare data, computer vision, and time series data (epidemiological, population health, or clinical)
  • Experience with AWS and Docker

The salary range for this position is $180,00 to $195,000 annually; as part of a total benefits package which includes health insurance, 401k and bonus. In accordance with state applicable laws, Cohere is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. Individual pay decisions are ultimately based on a number of factors, including but not limited to qualifications for the role, experience level, skillset, and internal alignment.
