Director of Data Engineering
The Opportunity

The Director of Data Engineering is a technical leader who will drive the strategic direction, evolution and operation of Pluralsight & A Cloud Guru's data platform. You will lead data engineering teams to develop the strategy for integration and unification of product, customer, and content data across the enterprise. This role will partner with business and technical leaders to deliver data solutions for analytics, data science, and reporting needs and strengthen our technical culture which emphasizes ownership and responsibility while acting as a trusted advisor to non-technical colleagues. You will be focused on leading the vision for data engineering teams at Pluralsight and iterating on the next generation of data platforms.
What you'll own:

  • Set the vision and establish a new strategy for data engineering teams to provide Data Warehousing and processing solutions to data science and analytics teams
  • Direct the management of the architecture of the holistic data platform inclusive of Snowflake and associated processing/tooling
  • Manage and lead the technical evolution of our data platform while focusing on business and customer outcomes
  • Build and promote a culture of learning, knowledge sharing and experimentation and contribute to creating a great team culture by modeling a collaborative approach
  • Provide guidance and management to data engineering teams dedicated to curation and data processing
  • Oversee the integration of data from multiple sources across Pluralsight companies; Prioritize high-value datasets and develop strategy for integration
  • Lead data quality efforts and work with business partners to orchestrate data management and cataloging efforts
  • Manage data governance across the platform to drive operational excellence, compliance and regulations, and exceptional customer experiences
  • Partner with internal customers to develop roadmap for tool and solution delivery, develop relationships, and understand the needs of the business


Who you are:

  • You have 10+ years of experience designing and delivering data warehouses, marts, and data for reporting to support business analytics
  • You are an expert at all things data and SQL. Experience with Snowflake is a must-have!
  • A proven leader of cross-functional teams guiding them to meet project goals while balancing the needs of many partners
  • An effective communicator with technical team members as well as business partners with the ability to distill complex ideas into straightforward language to present roadmaps at an executive level


Technologies our Data Engineering teams work with:
AWS - EC2, Sagemaker, S3, Lambda, Glue
Databases - Snowflake, Postgres, DynamoDB, Redshift
ETL - Fivetran, dbt cloud
Streaming - Kafka, DynamoDB streams
Experience you'll need:

  • Experience managing multiple teams and providing vision, strategy, and guidance to direct reports to meet the prioritized needs of internal customers.
  • Experience with cloud services and the capabilities that exist (AWS services, Kubernetes, Terraform etc.) as well as experience with processing and ETL frameworks (dbt, Fivetran. etc.)
  • Familiarity with governance/compliance frameworks (GDPR, CCPA, etc.)
  • Strong capability to manipulate and analyze complex, high-volume data from a variety of sources
  • Thorough understanding of cloud services, data processing, and data warehousing tools in order to provide guidance on industry standard practices and best tools for each use-case
  • Experience architecting and building an enterprise data warehouse with in-depth knowledge of dimensional modeling.
  • Experience with leading data management and cataloging programs
